Gentleman's Folder as a Gift

I thoroughly recommend the Kershaw Nakamura.

Beautiful knife; it is modern but classy and traditional at the same time. VG10 core with 420J2 outer layers.

I call this the tactical knife in a tuxedo...a huge +1

Queen does some nice slippies in wood scales, as does Case. Northfield also does some wood, IIRC, and their 1095 blade steel is an excellent user steel as well.

The only really nice folder I own is a Queen Mountain Man lockback. I think it was only $70. Might be a bit large for your intentions, but based on the quality and fit and finish, I would definitely recommend a Queen. Check the AGRussell site for all sorts of nice pocketknives.

Kershaw has their Seki-made #1993-2 'Gentleman's Folder' still available from many sources - even on Evil-Bay - although it's not in their '09 catalog. You could probably get two for your limit... if you look around. It has a lockback 3" VG-10 blade that, if mine is an indicator, comes razor sharp. The brass pins, lanyard hole, liners, etc, are nice. The sleek black Micarta scales are nicely done - a well executed package. The leatherbelt sheath is another matter. The plastic belt 'hook' is easily removed, making it a pocketable sheath. The knife is like a slippie - a thumbnail nick is used to open it.

You guys have listed some really good input/suggestions here. I think I found the perfect knife/tool for the old man especially for his first EDC type blade. It's the Victorinox golf tool. It's got a nice little blade for small utility tasks, and he loves golfing. He golfs like three times a week so this should be a perfect little gift. It would be nice if the blade were a little longer, but I think it's a good comprimise for a small multi-tool/SAK.

I was going to recommend the Fallkniven FH9, but I don't think you will find one under $150.

Then I saw that Kershaw Nakamura posted by Dekz, that is one sweet looking knife.

I give it a +2 and big

I bought the g/f a Case Stockman w/ amber bone ($49 locally, $38 on the net) and although she did not know what to think at first she seems to really appreciate it now. I just said... "When you get up in the morning, put it in your pocket. At night, take it out of your pocket. The next morhing, put it in your pocket... try not to put it in the washing machine too often." Funny... I don't think it even occurred to her to put it anywhere but in her purse... NE hoo... I was also really impressed with the little Case... I have not lately owned anything other than a Soddie as far as Slippies go... and this one was REALLY nice! My first "nice" knife was a Boker Canoe... had it in High School and lost it in the Rio Grande... bummer! I am definitely gonna pick up a slippie or two this Summer... I'm thinkin I'll start with a Doctor's Knife..

I guess the point to the whole story is ANYONE can see the beauty in a nice slippie!

Hi guys/gals. I'm looking for a suggestion to a nice gentleman's folder for a gift to my father. His b-day is coming up and I want to get him something different this year, plus it seems like he has everything already ya know...

I was thinking of a classic style slippy maybe. Since I don't know much about the classic slip joints I'm open for suggestions. One thing I know is that he really isn't into stag/bone handle scales and would prefer wood.

I'd like to keep the price under $150.00, but still get a decent/good blade steel and durability.

Thanks in advance.
