I never thought I'd need one, but apparently I do. I have a couple weddings coming up, and would like a nice, gentleman's folder. I think it may look a little better than a big ole REKAT in my pants(no, I'm really happy to see you.....). Nothing against REKAT.

I am looking for suggestions. Requirements:

1. sub-$150.00 price range
2. good materials
3. goes with black(gotta wear a tux...ugh)
4. looks classy

Other than that, im pretty easy on what will fit.

I was thinking about a BM 690, Dark Star, Blue Star, or the 942. Maybe a MT/LCC?

Anyway, as stated before, suggestions wanted...thanks guys.

If you find you must throw something at me, please make it a custom.

Try a Spyderco Viele with the VG-10 blade. It runs 90-100 bucks on the net, and is an excellent little knife.

Not too bad an idea...I never liked the Veile all as much as some others...but, it might suit the need.

How about WH Evolution?
With Wharncliff blade, perhaps?
Has good materials, goes with black and looks classy (IMHO).
I've got one of those and I'm keen into it.

I find LCC too big and heavy to be a gent's knife as a WH (or maybe 690).
One hell of a knife (in a positive way) otherways.

BM940 from your list if you need one with a clip, or my preference is the Carbon Fiber Lancet from William Henry, very light but still gives the performance and very classy lines and you can usually pick one up on the forsale for around $149...or there abouts, post in the Wanted Knives section...

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

I sometimes wear my LCC as a "dress" knife because it has that classical look to it. On the other hand, it is too large and heavy for use with most formalwear.

My current "gentlemen's folder" is the smaller CRKT Viele Wasp. It's a bit thick, but otherwise it is light, small, and classy looking at a very reasonable price ($80).

I vote for the Benchmade 690. I saw one yesterday at a store in Santa Fe, this is a gorgeous knife. A gentlemans folder if I ever saw one!

BM 940/942 makes an excellent gent's knife. It's thin and light, yet has a 3.4" blade. Can be carried in the vest pocket like a pen.
The LCC is a fabulous knife--love it, but too big and heavy for formal wear IMO, unless you are 6 foot 7 and weigh 350 lbs.

Try these ideas:

Spyderco small Centofante

Kershaw Ken Onion Mini Task (cool factor is very high)

Black Micarta Spyderco Calypso Jr

Maybe a set of pearl handled whittlers or stockmen from Case or Cammillus would be just the thing

Any of the traditional style folders from AG Russell would be good: AG Russell knives

I recently acquired one of the new BM 770 Osborne Axis Lock knives. It has a 2 7/8" blade, carbon fiber scales, a narrow clip that looks for all the world like a pen clip, and is light as can be. I find it very nice for formal type occasions and for places where I am going to be around non-knife people, such as the Quakers in my Monthly Meeting, who may not appreciate my tastes in cutlery. Can you imagine their reaction to a Sifu whipped out an snapped open? I bought mine from Grand Prairie Knives ( http://www.gpknives.com/benchmade/benchmade770.html ) for less than $120, shipping included. I really think that unless you want a bigger knife, in which case a BM940 Osborne or a Spyderco Viele is the answer, then you will really like the BM770.

My vote would go the BM885/Dark Star. Nice size for formal wear, is light weight in the pocket, and dark in color as not to stand out against formal type clothing. This is the one I carry for more formal events, at least the one or two that I ever get invitations for.

Blackie, I was thinking(scary, I know) you are looking for something with a dress up appearance. Why not a Carbon Fiber handled REKAT Sifu? It is a good looking knife with the carbon fiber handle and it goes with just about anything. Just something to consider.

One that I don't see mentioned very often but is a very nice gent's folder is the Moki Glory. SS bolster, cocobolo handle, you can also get it with a turquoise insert.

CRKT Mirage Titanium - 2.3" Blade, titanium handle and frame lock (like the sebenza). Very nice, slim design and can be found for about $70. CRKT also makes the Mirage Grey Ghost with aluminium handles and a 3" blade that would also fall into the gentleman's folder category.

Also have a BM 330 Pardue which is about the same size but didn't care much for it. Tiny, sharp edged thumb stud is difficult to manipulate and handles are awkward to hold. I like the blade shape but that's about it.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Benchmade 850 Mel Pardue gents folder. This knife is a little jewel.
