My father's 50th birthday is coming up and I thought there would be nothing better to get him than a nice knife. He's a classy individual who likes nice things so a gentleman's edc that he could carry and use would make me happy. I typically don't shop around for such knives so I'm looking for suggestions on quality, functional, and aesthetically pleasing blades under 150$. The first knife that came to mind is a Spyderco UKPK but like I said, I want options.

Pictures help :D

How "gentlemany" of a knife are we talking?

I bought my dad a Kershaw 1993-2 for xmas. Messed with it for a minute before putting it up and man it's a nice knife.

You already mentioned UKPK, which would be a good choice. I don't have a pic of my CF UKPK, but here's my G10 with another good choice, a ZDP Caly 3

Or a BM 480-1

Or a Leaf Storm

Or even a Terzuola slipit

I don't think that he would have a preference. He has large hands and I would like to get something that can be gripped nicely in with all fingers. Something voluptuous and curvy would probably be more his style and also aid in comfort. MANTZAO has the right idea and the carbon fiber knives by Spyderco are solid options and would be the first I would personally look at.

....In addition, he has a professional job and dresses up on a daily basis. The knife should go well with his lifestyle. He doesn't have a collection like I do so this will be THE knife.

Mcusta is what you are looking for. they are classy and have more options as far as handles go than Spyderco.

I AM IMPRESSED! This is my first encounter with the Mcusta collection and it seems to specialize in artistic gentlman-like folders. They are all in my price range so they will definitely be a high consideration! Thank you very much :)

possibly a benchmade axial?

since the first time i say them, i wanted one for a "dress up knife"

That is a beauty. However, if I'm not mistaken the blade is longer than 3". 3in blades are the maximum for carry in the state of California. I should have mentioned this in my original message =X.

thats only the 230, there are other axials that fit the bill

like the 250

its shorter, not the exact same, but like it

Touche! Then that would definitely be a reasonable choice. Now that I get to see a pool of gentleman folder options, I'm getting a general idea of what's out there. Honestly, the Mcusta collection was the most visually attractive possibility, despite all of the great recommendations:thumbup:. I do want to see my dad use the knife I end up getting him. For that, the knife has to be (or at least seem to me) more practical and less of a novelty display knife. My dad loves cars so the carbon fiber Spyderco models might be what I end up dabbling into.

That might be the limit in your locality but the state itself has no limits on blade length. You cannot carry any fixed blade concealed, however, but folders are fine.

Get him a nice slipjoint! Dressy and classy!

Something from GEC (too many options to list). (hundreds and hundreds of options large, small multi blade Trappers, Barlows, castro, cattle king, fur taker, fur trapper, Bone handles, Stag handles, burnt stag handles...........)

Schatt & Morgan large barlow? Ats34 steel, dressy bone handles and snazzy bolsters! Big blade little blade?

Lockback with bone handles. 1095 blades or stainless what ever you prefer.

Most well within your price range.

GEC Northfield Sunfish (4 1/4 inch handle)
Steelsunfish.jpg

Barlow (3 inch handle burnt stag scales)

Schatt and Morgan large barlow (4.25 or so handle) ATS34 steel

Queen/Burke collab large barlow. Bone scales. 4.25 or so handle) D2 steel
QueenBurklargebarlow.jpg

Queen/Pardue collab canoe whittler (stag handles) D2 blades

Just to name a few. I think that slip joints and traditional folders are just plain classy! You can use them around non knife people too, because they look like Grandpa's knife!

If you like Mcusta, Al Mar would be something to look at as well.

I would also suggest looking into A.G.Russel for some classy looking folders.

Personally, I find the 3in Carbon Fiber Lockback quite attractive for that type of use.

Also, the Boker plus Elegance might fit the bill.

They're both a bit cheaper, but are still quality looking knives.

Hope that helps a bit :).

+1

California most definately does not have a statewide length limit on folders, but local ordinances do trump, so make sure to check your local laws to get the exact rules.

I think a carbon fiber UKPK would be great too, it is super ergonomic, looks great, and the lack of a lock is actually a strength for an EDC gentleman's folder. The Terzoula Slipit is even more elegant IMO too.
