Gentleman's/Traditional/Classy Folder Recommendation

Rural okay, Urban not, common theme heard here, the difference, one area sees these tools in use more.

Hide your knives lose your knives?
I would think responsible everyday use and courteously helping others overcome their irrational phobias is the better course.

Like Pinnah and others, I find that a two-hand-opening traditional knife spooks the non-knife people much less, especially in office settings. Also, simply being small overall (3" or less) helps.

The fact is, knives are weapons, and everybody's seen scary movies. I just find it easier to EDC something that slides under the radar in such settings.

I suppose the fact that I carry a gun for a living seems to mitigate the fact that a knife can have any sort of stigma attached to it.

Well, it means that people who freak won't be freaking about the knife.... And similarly, if you're wearing a law-enforcement uniform, much will be overlooked in regard to any kind knife you're carrying because the unifrom will provide a visible reason for carrying. But when a civilian hauls out a large/scary/aggressive-looking knife, the assumption is the he/she could well run amok.

All we have to go with in regard to strangers is how they look to us, and if they are carrying a weapon, it's safest to assume the worst. This has been coded into us by evolution, and it's unrealistic to think this reaction can be finessed easily.

I have never observed this phenomenon, regardless of uniform. That being said, large pocket knives are the norm around here, and belt carried fixed blades are far from unusual. I rarely see a male that isnt carrying a pocket knife visible via a pocket clip, from high school kids to suit wearing professionals. It is not abnormal at all for suspects we deal with to have large clip mounted pocket knives, and causes no undue alarm to us, as its normal.

I suppose locale plays a large part, and I am glad I live in a location where knives are looked upon as nothing more out of the ordinary than a set of keys and a wallet.

Rural and suburban Oklahoma, which I am well aware does not have the same urban population as many here are referring. Its just such a foreign concept that I am trying to wrap my mind around it. Here, open carry of firearms yields little to no reaction, and knives dont even register on the radar. To be honest, the only comments I ever hear about knives of any kind are when a grown man doesn't have a knife, and gets ridiculed.

Even time spent in larger cities has not exposed me to these types of attitudes. Granted, I have not spend any time in northern cities, but Dallas, Tulsa, Houston, and OKC have not yielded these sorts of reactions.

This is all very interesting.

Take a look at Columbia River Knife and Tool. They have some nice looking knives that don't look too threatening. If you have a Big 5 store around they often have good sales on them.

Not a traditional, but for those on a budget, the Kershaw Crown looks pretty "gentlemanly". It's also not assisted so you won't have any "is that a switchblade?" comments.

Can get one of those for $15, and like Kershaw's other budget knives, it really has a lot of bang for the buck. There's also an old Walmart exclusive version with blue micarta scales instead of the black, which you can possibly find via the Exchange or auction sites(or pawn shops, which is where I found mine).
