Hopefully, our National Anthem won't be butchered this event. Super bowl rendition gagged me until I hit mute.

"Smoke" Stewart seems to have inherited the driver's unoffical spokesman position since we lost Dale Sr. First it was Curtis Turner who was such an activitist that " Big Bill " France leaned on him, particularly since Turner wanted to unionize the drivers.
Later King Richard took the job & next it was a series of drivers that were dominant in that time period.Likely were Pearson,Cale Yarboro [ now an import car dealer in Florence,S.C.] Bobby Allison & so on....
Stewarts beef is bump drafting & I agree with him. If they would shixcan restrictor plates, cars would be spread out & the best car, driver, pit crew would win.Wrecks & grevious injuries should be at a minimum. I remember when Richard lapped the field more than once.
This plate racing equates with the PC type thinking.
Remember if you weren't a good ball player? You were picked last & you accepted it.Not today !
In fairness to NASCAR,they claim it will promote safer racing by reducing speeds. I differ, thinking if there are intervals there will be fewer wrecks & there would be more bolt holes if one occured in front of you.
Article in today's Daytona News Urinal about the '73 race & the last lap wreck between Petty & Pearson. We were in the Joe Weatherly stands & they stopped in front of us. Petty couldn't fire back up but Pearson did & finished at about 5 mph.Dale Inman & crew pushed Petty across for 2nd. place. That's how far they were ahead of the field !
Imagine that happening with the entire field on their bumpers. Mass mayhem !

This old man's gonna' be busy next Sunday. Early casual church, trip to gun & knife show, buy a Romanian AK-47, quick lunch & a power nap before the flag falls.

Safe racing !

Uncle Alan

 Can't wait!
Hopin' DEI gets back to where they belong.JR has Tony back for crew chief, for all season I hope.

Jeff Burton was fast.
Saw Pretty Boy,er,I mean Jeff Gordon talkin' about how fast his car was.JR said that his, meaning DEI's,ran good in the pack.
Hoping he does what he needs to do to get the job done. :D

GO JR.

Both Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart made some strong statements against bump drafting and Dale Jr put it all in perpsective by calling a a necessary evil caused by restrictor plates.

The Gibbs Racing cars are fast as are Hendricks'. Kyle Petty looked good in practice - are they using Hendiricks motors?

If Jeff Gordon can stay in front of Kyle Busch and the wrecks that Busch will cause, look for him to repeat.

Heh, Nascar... I only watch it for the crashes. :p

Crashes are an attraction & I was just kidding. Restrictor racing is a huge wreck waiting to happen, sure.
We old fans enjoy the strategy on the track and in the pits. It can be very addictive.Watching kids mature into seasoned drivers creates favorites.

Safe racing !

Uncle [ fan since the '40's ] Alan

I also find Nascar to be most exciting when they end under a yellow flag.

Just kidding! (You didn't believe that I really found that exciting, did you? :p)

Actually, am I the only one here who would like to see a Nascar race using real stock cars?

Cosine,
Not trying to be cute:p but what exactly do you mean "real" stock cars?Been watchin' NASCAR since the late '60's,not quite as old as Uncle Alan:D but times change, rules change.
When Earnhardt Sr. was killed,NASCAR mandated the Hantz device,a good change,IMO.
Hopefully Dale Earnhardt,Sr. will be the last driver to be killed in a NASCAR race.
Countin' the days to Daytona.
Go JR! :D

Are you ready for some "slam-drafting?!"

Welcome to the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup season.

Gibbs boys looked good-obviously...

I would say this could possibly be the most wide open "chase" for the Cup in a long time.

Some other quick observations from qualifying and the Bud Shootout:

*Childress racing has benefited from their partnership with Cosworth...1 pole and 1 top 10.

Has the greatest name in Cup racing history finally begun to put the pieces together to field a competitive program...read: Petty, Loomis, Labonte?

*Not sure what to hthink about DEI, Jr. et.al....looked like they were just happy to be in the middle of the pack.

*The Big Boys...Hendrick, Roush...looked good and bad...see above.

*Carl Edwards got SCREWED by Nascar decision makers today...are these people dumber than the NCAA rule-makers? Looks close.

*Could Kyle Bush be a bigger douche-bag than his brother? Judging from todays on-track performance and off-track comments...I would respond with a resounding...YES!

*Can Ray Everenham finally put it all together this year? With the current driver stable and Charger nose, I say no...although "Krash Kahne" remains somewhat of an enigma.

Any more...?

Almost forgot...
Chad Knaus, Jimmy Johnsons' crew cheif has been "ejected" from Daytona for rules violations. NASCAR says there will be no appeal. JJ will have to start from the back of his Rwin 150 race. Further penalties will be announced after the race on Sunday. Oops!

Petty Enterprises runs Dodges and I believe they have a deal with Everenham as far as motors are concerned. Hendricks=Chevy.

Uncle Alan

It definitely competed with Rosanne Barr for the distinction of being the worse rendition in front of a major audition. Truly horrible. I think Barr’s version was still worse by a hair.

Sorry, no. Come on, folks. It's just a bunch of cars going around and around in a circle. :D

I love the accidents :D.

I seriously don't have any enjoyment for Nascar. Now, drag racing, I really like watching that. Unfortunately, don't have cable, so I don't get to see it that often.

Well, I read an article in a Popular Mechanic a year or two ago where they compared a stock Monte Carlo taken off of a dealer's lot to a Nascar racing Monte Carlo. The racing Monte Carlo wasn't really "stock." Everything was either replaced or modified in some way. (I'm not talking about cosmetic features or safety features. I'm talking about components that drive the car.)

Oh, great! Now we can watch a bunch of guys take cars that only resemble what you drive on the street in an almost cartoon manner prove that they can turn left in them. Yes, they do so at terribly high speeds, but I am not sure exactly what that proves. I liked NASCAR when what they were really basically the cars that were used on the streets, in other words, stock cars. And I loved NASCAR when it persuaded folks like Dan Gurney to drive one of those big old Ford Galaxies around Riverside Racetrack!

One thing, at least, Detroit is building V-8 rear wheel drive vehicles again so we don't have the silly fiction of front wheel drive transverse engine V-6 cars being run with V-8s and rear wheel drive.
