Gent's knife in carbon steel?

Normally I buy knives for the joy of accumulating, or just "lookin at." Today is rare, I'm looking for a knife to actually carry. ;)

But I'm not having much luck. Looking for a small traditional pocketknife pattern offered in either carbon steel or higher-grade stainless. Senator, equal-end whittler, equal-end pen knife, lobster, etc. I really like the current Robeson Sleeveboard, but want better than 420 stainless, especially for the price (I might order one of their Doctor patterns though).

Too bad Hen and Rooster doesn't offer their Gent's Knife in carbon. Buck Creek, Boker, and even Queen offer carbon steel choices, but not on the smaller knives (or so it seems).

Is there something I'm overlooking?

Thanks,
-Bob

Try looking at the current Great Eastern range? I've been well pleased there. A lockback in carbon from Weidmannsheil is a frequent carry of mine too.

can you recommend a dealer for Weidmannsheil, or is that brand no longer made?

So far the reviews from Great Eastern's lineup haven't been that great. But I've got my eye on them. And so far it seems they haven't made any gents patterns (yet).

If you like CV steel but want something nicer than yellow Delrin you could always buy one of the Case CV knives and have it customized. I know one guy that'll do it for the cost of a second knife...

There is Case Red Bone (a peanut is in the mail for me!) in CV. There are also a few Amber Bone Cases in CV...

Great question! A real head scratcher...

Hey Smiling-Knife,
Thanks for the heads-up on that Boker. I saw that half-whittler pattern at a couple of dealers, but didn't know it was offered in carbon. Might be just the thing.

I also have found the Queen senator knife in D2 at Cumberland Knife Works. Not traditional carbon, but better than the standard low-end stainless offerings found elsewhere.

How about a 3.25 in Northwoods Stockman in pearl and D2? Plenty classy!

my Case M279 just arrived and I am very pleased. You can find a few on eBay. I bought it for the same use you intend...paid $7 incl. shipping.

If you're curious what it looks like, the ENDED eBay auction Item number is 180132458431

Best of Luck,
Kevin

The Case pattern that's the closest to what I'm looking for is the Eisenhower. But it's not available in carbon steel, or even CV. Not that I can find anyway...

That's a nice stockman!

...or how about a 3 inch CV Case Yellow Delrin congress? Not as elegant....but smallish and carbon

Marcinek, that is just sweet, and in CV. I've got a couple of yellow handled Camillus, Congresses, but they are stainless. Good knives at that, but a trim little CV Case would be a nice addition. Sheesh, one more for the wish list.

Bob, you can find a lot of Weidmannsheil on ebay. I picked one up, good as new, for a song. Great little blade.

Isn't that a nice one Amos? I don't own it...I've only seen it being sold at one place. Did you find out who its available from? Can I say? Is that allowed?

Eh, just right click on the picture and get its "Properties". Nice fella, that guy who is selling it!

I second Northwoods, I picked up one of these senators in mammoth, it's in D2 well made and purty.

Thanks mog555, I just came across Northwoods recently. Nice knives! For D2 and nice looking stag, the price cannot be beat! I think they are made by Queen and the scales are provided by Northwoods. Or something like that.

Its nioce to hear from someone who has one and likes the quality, because I may be getting one.

Question for you...How was the sharpness of the knife out of the box? I have heard complaints about Queen and their D2 needing reprofiling when new.

It needed some work, but if I remember correctly it didn't take long, took a nice edge, and as my EDC seems to hold it well. But yeah out of the box, I've seem much better factory edges from the likes of Case.

Thanks mog555! Man, that stag senator has been calling my name since the moment I saw it!

Have 2 Great Easterns and both are exceptionally well finished, I've heard one or two negative reviews but mainly positive.I will be buying more certainly.

Weidmannsheil can be got reasonably from e-bay but forget all that nonsense about old stock from 91 and before. They are new made in Germany according to old patterns or parts, but they are certainly worthwhile knives and can be got for about 40-50 dollars. I like mine anyway.
