I've been looking at this knife for a while and finally bought it. The "genuine stag" has a nice glow to it. Looks vintage to me. The "bark" goes from bolster to bolster but it's nicely rounded for an even grip. I'm looking forward to putting it in my pocket. :)

Edit: I intended to put this in the stag thread but accidentally posted a new topic. :o

That is insanely nice! I was unaware GEC were now doing single sping multi-blades (dont tend to keep up with whats new too well :p)...I really love that!!! the stag is fantastic and really has that authentic tradition look to it.

Great looking knife although the big 25 engraved into the bolster kind of takes away from the beauty of the knife.

That is nice stag. It has that mellow "oiled" look that I like.

I'd make that mine in a minute if it didn't sport the bail. With stag looking this good new, just consider what it will be like in a year or two, stunning.
Seen decent looking slabs on their 26 Watchpocket Sunfish, just not my pattern that one though.

Agreed. Without the bail, that knife would be pretty much perfect.

Thank you for all the comments, guys. The bail and the price tag are the reasons why it took me so long to buy it. But I had a rough day and decided to cheer myself up. I'm contemplating the possibility of a bale-ectomy. I'm a founding member of PAGUOBBGEC (People Against the Gratuitous Use of Bails by Great Eastern Cutlery). ;)

Sign me up Jake, I hate the bloody bail (it's OK on a clunker like a Scout knife)

How do you plan on filling the hole?

You are officially a member. Your badge and survival kit are in the mail.

I'm not sure if I will give it a go or if I will ask one of the talent members of this forum for help. Or if I'll just put up with the bail.

I can't tell if the bail is attached to the pivot pin and that worries me since I don't want to end up with an expensive knife with loose blades. If it is attached through the pivot pin, I was thinking that the pin could be peened to fill the hole. I'm guessing that it would probably leave a blemish on both sides where the bail made contact with the bolster. I also have a Conductor with a superfluous bail and would probably use that as a guinea pig before mucking up this one since it has such nice stag.

That is a beautiful WO Jake!! It looks well loved already :D I'm not a fan of the bail either which is why I ignored the NFs this time around.

The only GEC I have with an attached bail is a Ancient Kauri wood #33. My SFO single blade #85 below was made so that a bail can be attached if wanted. As you can see, the last pin is hollow. I do have the bail as well but don't plan on putting it on (it was specifically made for the #85 but is supposed to fit other single blade GECs like the #72 or #73 as well). I don't know what the setup is on a #33 or #68 though. Perhaps an email to GEC is warranted before taking the plunge?

I assume a maker could remove the bail and then re-peen the bolster so it looks like it came from the factory. Whether or not there would be play would depend on who worked on it but there shouldn't be any. All 4 GECs that I had work done on had the bolsters polished to make the pin invisible. In some of those cases, the serial number of the knife was removed too which is fine with me.

I'd say that knife is worth its own thread. What a beauty! That stag has the butter-colored, translucent look you see sometimes on fine, old knives. It does look vintage! Personally, I like the bail.

I came to this thread to say exactly the same. Just an astounding piece, congrats.
Sincerely, a bail aficionado

Looks like it was made a hundred years ago . . . I thought GEC was a relatively new company? ;)

I like that a lot Jake! I hope it cheered you up :)

I agree GEC does some of the nicest Genuine Stag. I have noticed on my 73 the dark areas rubbing off, but at some point I am going to fix that carefully with some Potassium permanganate.

Congrats.

Really a nice stag. Well, the bail wouldn´t bother me, personally. Thank you for sharing this one here.

Kind regards
Andi
