I live in East TN and grew up in the hot Florida Panhandle. I inherited my father's house in FL this year when he passed away and he had two geothermal units installed. Geothermal cools very well in the FL heat. It does not seem to heat as well as it cools and so far there has only been one issue with a unit when the fan motor went out and had to be replaced. The initial expense was quite high and I have had others in the business tell me that geothermal units are very flaky when it comes to their electronics and to expect repairs. Over the past 4 years I have been impressed with the cooling ability and I suppose that for Florida the heating ability of geothermal is sufficient. I believe that there are ways to improve their heating capacity.
Here in TN I do not find that a heat pump is near sufficient for heating in the winter. When the temps drop below freezing it will run almost 24/7.......especially in a cabin and the heating bills become quite high. For me......a wood burning stove proves to work out very well.
