Hello all,
Today, I had the choice between fixing my garage door, or go play outside in my favorite spot - the Gatineau Park.
It didn't take me very long to decide... I thought I'd place a geocache for the occasion, and I'd practice my firemaking skills as well...
What a nice and bright sunny day! The snow was very crispy; the snowshoes were not needed for the first part of the trip:
Miles and miles of quiet mixed forest - what's not to like! Since I was making a lot of noise because of the snowshoes and the snow, I didn't see any animals :-(
Found a nice little protected cranny to hide the cache, an old ammo box . I'll publish it next week, so others can visit and enjoy the area:
I chose to bring my trusty Nessmuk knife with me...here it is, in all it's glory
:
After 2 hours or so, I stopped to make fire and enjoy a "snow tea". I brought some tea leaves with me but no tin, so I improvised one:
Gathered everything I need for the fire. 16 stricking attemps after (!), the fluffy white birch paper caught the sparks and I could melt the snow for the tea:

Of course, as I was operating the d**m camera, my foil tin fell over...grr...started all over again. I've been able to get a rolling boil before the whole fire went through the snow cover, even though I had some wood under it.
The knife performed satisfactorily. The back of the blade is rounded for more comfort, hence it can't be used as a striker for the firesteel. It is heavy enough for light chopping duty, even though it's only 1/8 thick.
All in all, a very nice winter day spent in to woods...now, I still have to fix this garage door...
