How many of you have tried GeoCaching???

http://www.geocaching.com/

Its a great reason to go to the outdoors. I found more hiking trails and been to more places and got lost or ended up too far from the car at night time. While having fun GeoCaching. Also a good reason to carry all the survival gear with you on the hikes.

I do, the coolest part is when you sign up and find out there are caches about 250m from your house, which you never knew about :D

It's great fun! Ms.Carla, Chikenbutt, and I do it occasionally. I think I need to get a better GPS though for this year. I'm using a Garmin Etrex Legend and it has a tendency to loose signal in heavy tree canopies :( Anybody have any suggestions?

I tried it out last summer and had a blast.
aaronjay, I have the same gps and noticed the same thing, but I don't see myself etting a new one, I think it was a great bargain.

I have been doing it for years. I started my boys when they were young and my wife enjoys it also. There are caches all over. Children like it because it is so much like a treasure hunt. Its a great family activity. And yes, as with any outdoor activity you should be prepared to spend the night out just in case that happens.

Visit my Cache if you are in NH. 171 people so far have visited it.

The other sport you may want to look at is Letterboxing. Kind of like geocaching without the GPS.

The etrex is a good unit all you need to do is stop for a 5 min or so to let it settle down. I got my self a 60cx last year and i love it. But even the 60 under some condition needs to be set down for 5 min to get its bearing.

Yep, been caching for about 5 years now.

Man some of the people here in NC have thousands of finds.

I've been doing the caching thing for 1 and a half, now.
Good fun, it gets me outside, and takes me to some really cool places. I really enjoy it.

myself and my g/f have been caching for a year and a half,,,we have been to some very remote caches here in ontario
one took us all day to do ,,put the canoe in paddle 3 miles, portage,,a second lake,,a second portage,, all in all five lakes in,,, and same 5 lakes out ,, to do one that had been posted for over a year without any finders,,,
on the way out we placed one ,,which has also been unlogged so far for hmmm 8 months
geo-caching can bring you to some nice places that are right in your backyard but you never knew about

I just started doing the paperless route. Its so much better just drive around and see if anything is in the area. Dont have to plan anymore just go. With some caches i done about 14 miles each way to to log some finds.

I have the same problem with the Etrex Vista. Try the Garmin "GPSMAP 60" series of GPS units. The antenna is amazing. Even better that you may already have all the MapSource CD's, that work with the Etrex Legend and 60 series. I always prefer the units with more memory.

I like recording fishing spots and marking places that I find that may have old arrowheads.

BTW, Geocaching is great fun. I have been doing it for 3 years. I enjoy the challenge of Geocaching during the winter after a good snow storm. After the cache is buried in the snow, it is nearly impossible to find! Maybe I am a glutton for punishment!

Enjoy

Guys, same thing here Etrex Legend, but less losing total signal, what happens in tree canopy is that it goes into a more coarse adjustment, say plus or minus 100 or more feet, which can put you well away from actually "pin pointing" something.
For land navigation it wouldn't send you off into never-never land, but for finding a tupperware container with a QP doll in it, well.....

Beware, I have read about people leaving a container of Dog Poop, and other nasty items.

"I found it, I found it!!! ewwwwwww." :D

My wife used to letterbox, like geocashing, but it is more written directions and clues, really intersting. But there is bad blood between letterboxers and Geocashers. (INTARWEB FIGHT INTARWEB FIGHT!) But she also does geocashing. As well.

As for me I'm still quite fond of the old reliable map and compass orienteering.

Hi JohnnyMayhem. I know of one guy that does GeoCaching using a compass with a map. My hat off to anyone that can do GeoCaching using a map and a compass.

To avoid the inacuracy problems you should always back up your gps with a compass and get a good bering in the most open area possible. then use visual terrain markers just like compass navigation

I also but the gps away once i get within 100 feet or so and begin to search for the cache.

I have used an etrex Legend for Three years without problems, I havent done much for the last year or so.

PS: Skunk I have never found a cache like that and im glad.

They wouldnt post one of mine because I listed a knife in the contents list

Mabey I will do a special blade forums one and fill it with some junkers I wouldnt mind parting with. Everyone can take one junker and leave another. HMM Ill get back to you guys on this one.:D

Hi trout. Think of it as a treasure hunt Except its not the pirates that hide gold but some other guy or girl. If you check out the site i put in my first post they explain it alot more. You can also look up the forums and get a much better idea about the game. I would recommende it to anyone who likes the outdoors. It would take you places you never would have found out in the first place. Its also lots of fun. I carry my camera with me offten and i get great pics from new places.
