Just want to let all Georgia (and surrounding area) makers, collectors, enthusiest, etc. know that the Fall meeting of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers' Guild will be in Columbus, GA next month - Nov. 8th.
It will be at Don Tommey's Shop.
We invite anyone interested to come visit and see what the Guild is about.
This is a chance to meet and talk with some of the finest custom makers in the southeast, see some outstanding demos on several different techniques, get help with those tough questions, make some lasting friendships and eat well. This is the place to network face to face with many of the fine folks that offer their expertise here on BF and other forums. You are not too "Green" or inexperienced to benefit from this organization.

I realize most of you that know me affiliate everything I do with forging and smithing, but the Guild is made up of all types of makers even stock removal folks. Don is a very accomplished SR maker and a visit to his shop is worth the effort. He can fabricate a jig or device to do just about anything in that shop and is very willing to share his knowledge.
I believe one of our members is also doing a scrimshanding demo during the day.

Heck, we even tolerate 'ol Roosko crossing the river and showing up from time to time.

For more infromation and directions go to: www.georgiaknifemakersguild.com
(directions should be posted there within the next couple of days).

Oh wow, I didn't realize that there was any real group from GA. I would be very interested in coming assuming you don't mind newbies with lots of questions.

I'm just going to assume that's rhetorical and say "C'mon now, you'll have a blast"

Wow, an event in my city for once. I'll be there for sure :). So are collectors coming as well as makers?

Yep. There will likely be a few collectors there as well. They are welcome as is anyone that has an interest in knives. The Guild also will take them on as associate members. Without collectors where would we makers be?

We always have a good time, good food and some of the best people you will ever want to meet. The demonstrations are great ways to pick up pointers and there is always an on going Bull Session where the information is really flying fast and furious. We usually have a display table for makers to show what they have or are working on and a few have been known to sell a few knives there as well. If you can come please let us know so Don can get a good idea of the number to prepare for and participate in the "iron in the hat" raffle(buy tickets and bring something knife or shop related to add to the raffle). It is how we pay for lunch. I'm going to post a picture of the knife donated for the John Poythress Scholarship fund in a day or so, so check back to see it.

Hope to see you there.

You will love it. They all are great guys, but one word of warning though, do not go if you do not want to fall in love with making knives. They will get you addicted real quick. Really you will not find a better bunch of guys.

Would something like a little necker knife be acceptable to make for the raffle? I don't think anyone wants my shop junk. :D

Your "junk" could be another's treasure. Just never know. While it's up to you what you put on the table, because we are (for the most part) materials, supplies, etc. seem a bit more appropiate. The knife might be better as a JP Scolarship raffle donation. Once we sign you up as a member (hint, hint) you can possibly avail yourself of the benefits of the Scholarship itself. Quite a deal if you ask me. Looking forward to meeting you.
Like Harry said we have a very good time.

Wade liked the Guild so much, he moved to Texas! Just kidding, Wade miss you brother.
When you bringing your granddaughter down to make her 2nd knife?

This knife has been donated to the Georgia Guild by Will Dutton to be used in the raffle to generate funds for the John Poythress Scholarship Fund. It has a 3.5 inch blade, that is mirror polished and hollow ground. The handle scales are purple heart with red liners. The tang is tapered. The guard, pin and thong hole liner are stainless steel. It comes with a tooled leather sheath. This is a very well made little hunter that some lucky individual at the meeting in Columbus will get to call their own.
