Does anyone know if gerber's line of Bear Grills Survival knives are any good? They seem really gimmicky to me. I can't judge because I have yet to experience one. Your input would be appreciated!

Thanks, Have a nice day!

A gerber-made mystery steel partially serrated "ultimate survival knife" named after someone that slept in motels in a survival situation gimmicky????? impossible.

I even hate to admit this but I was given one as a gift and I would say VERY GIMMICKY!!!!! Save your $ for a real knife!

I have my Bear Grylls scout clipped in my pocket now. It has been my edc since this spring and it is a well made little knife (for the money). I took it on a trip to the beach. it stayed in my pocket throughout the whole time of para-sailing and swimming in the salt water. I had a lanyard on it but the clip rides low and clips the knife very securely and it never moved. It seems to hold a edge very well and the blade never rusted the whole time i was at the beach (inside the handle did get a little rust that was easy to remove) Overall i like it especially for the price, had i lost it swimming or para-sailing i would have bought another one:)

There are certainly better knives for the money, but its not terrible and the sheath is actually pretty cool. I've used it a lot out in the woods and so far its faring decently. I use it as a beater/abuser knife so it gets all the jobs I dont want to use a good knife on. Just the other day I was using it to baton through some firewood and I didn't have a good sized stick to baton with so I just picked up a rock and used that. There was no noticeable damage to the spine after that.

I also have a huge man crush on Bear so that was a big factor in the decision.

Gimmicky? Yep, it's a celebrity "branded" knife, so of course it is.

Does it work is the real question, and so far I've not had any problems with the sheath folder and I've been carrying it for a few months now EDC.

I'm not a big fan of Bear, his show is probably the worst of the type, but after some initial problems with the fixed blades handle, Gerber redesigned it and they seem to be doing fine in the actual tests I've seen.

As cheap as they are, I's say try one for yourself and find out first hand.

Gerber? Ick. That is all.

I have had several Gerber knives, and they were all awful. Makes me very hesitant to put any faith in the Bear Grylls lineup. Great for people who know nothing about knives. But generally just poor quality if you have anything decent to compare them to. At least you won't feel bad when you lose/break it...

I wouldn't mind having the sheath with the diamond sharpener, fire starter and whistle. If anyone has already broken their knife and wants to sell it...

It's a shame to see so much doo doo called survival knives.

Seen them on Wal-Marts website for $40.00.....They'll probably be around $30.00 by Christmas,
then I might get one..

To be fair, I did the same thing with an SRM710 with the same result LOL

To be fair, yup, they are junk IMHO. I bought the fixed blade for my daughter & told her it was junk, but she knows everything & HAD to have it. It worked better than i thought for feather sticking. It was sharp. Fire stick was nice & so was the sharpener. She bent the tip within 10 minutes of getting it home. She did not throw it. She did a stab depth test in a log, but instead of wiggling it up & down to get it out, she wiggled left to right, not a lot, just like 2 times (L, R, L, R) & it was junk. I handed her all of my Beckers & she did the exact same thing with NO damage to any of them-even the BK11.

I too have a man crush for bear grylls-hes just so entertaining.
Of course they're a gimmick.
I only own the fire starter which I bought for my kids.
I'm a Firefighter of 26 years & yet I have trouble starting the fire in my slow combustion wood heater indoors with torn up newspaper & shaved up dry eucalyptus bark as kindling. It just takes time that I usually don't have.
How the F**K does Grylls do it in the bottom of a rainforest with wet kindling in a very humid environment with one or two quick strokes of the striker & rod??and WOOOFF there y go.
oh yeah its a gimmick & he gets unlimited outtakes.

as long as you get a newer one/redesigned one which hopefully should break on you (parang and ultimate knifes had issues i think) then they should work fine. I'm not 100% sure how to tell the new ones from the old ones so that sorta keeps me away from them as well. I also personnaly don't like how thick the folder is so I dont carry/own it but the name alone wouldnt stop me from buying it if thats the only thing available and i needed a blade.

Thanks guys I have to dissagree that Gerber's are junk I love them! (For the price range) I might try one out just for fun. Thanks

Their LMF knife cost more but is still affordable and is honestly the only Gerber that tempts me to buy it. It's unique. It seems like a fun design to try out. As for the Bear Grills line, the look plane Jane to me. Only the sheaths seem cool. And that alone may be worth the cost.
