Gerber Bear Grills gimmicky?

as long as you get a newer one/redesigned one which hopefully should break on you (parang and ultimate knifes had issues i think) then they should work fine. I'm not 100% sure how to tell the new ones from the old ones so that sorta keeps me away from them as well.

The only way to tell, is the thickness of the orange part on the handle between the handle and the hammer end. The original version it's about 1.5mm thick, and on the revised ones it's much wider.

Thanks guys I have to dissagree that Gerber's are junk I love them! (For the price range) I might try one out just for fun. Thanks

Never said that Gerbers in general are junk. My comment was to the Bear Grylls fixed blade only. I own Gerber knives too. I have a Freeman folder & a Metolius fixed blade & love them both. Metolius is a full width, full tang. I would not pry very hard with it though. Both take & hold a razors edge. NOT bashing Gerber, just the "Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife." That is a pretty bold statement/claim to make, but since they made it, compared to that statement/claim & what one would expect from someone who did make that statement/claim, IMHO, i feel it is junk & other knives can be had for the same price that are WAYYYY stronger, like a BK2 for example.

Does anyone know if gerber's line of Bear Grills Survival knives are any good? They seem really gimmicky to me. I can't judge because I have yet to experience one. Your input would be appreciated!

The machete is actually quite good; my favorite machete actually.

The other "BG" blades are junk.

I would think that getting the Izula with the fire starting kit for a bit more makes more sense for just a few more dollars

Gerber? Ick. That is all.

I have had several Gerber knives, and they were all awful. Makes me very hesitant to put any faith in the Bear Grylls lineup. Great for people who know nothing about knives. But generally just poor quality if you have anything decent to compare them to. At least you won't feel bad when you lose/break it...
What problems have you had to make them "awful"? I have about 7 in my collection, and have yet to have a problem!

It looks like the multitool might be of some use as something to toss in your truck door pocket. Other than that, from what I have checking one out at Walmart and reviews posted, they are junk. I agree with the kid at the sporting goods counter at Wally World, who had no idea I was a knife nut...

"Just buy a Buck woodsman or a 110."

Put another $20 or two away and buy a Ontario SpecPlus 2, Ontario RBS, ESEE 3 or 4, Kabar LH Bowie, Kabar Fighting Utility or Becker BK2, 5, 7 or 9.

You'll be happy you bought a better knife.

Another poster said it best... Gerbers are great knives... To people who don't know knives.

i have the machette, and i like it a lot; it feels good and is effective...no interest in the other pieces...

but i am a big fan of the BG clothing line...

It's not gimmicky at all.

Both the show and the knife make good business sense and bring in tons of money.

Get a Becker BK 2 - ESEE 4 - Ka-Bar fighting or utility knife. Bear & Gerber are jusr buddied up for the money. I saw them at WalMart and it looked like a big plastic handled POS to me. :barf:

I used and retired the machete as junk. it curled over from bark. The steelmis seriously turdy. But the handle is awesome and Zmr. G is cool.

Their LMF knife cost more but is still affordable and is honestly the only Gerber that tempts me to buy it.
I've Had the LMF 2 since 2007, and I have used it so much. I think they made the BG knife based on that. I have beat the crap out of it and for 20 or 30 dollars more I don't think you can go wrong...Ecspecially if it keeps you from spending 30 more dollars on a new Bear Grylls knife after you break it!

I have the fixed blade and I like it. The only negative aspect is the firesteel. It's hard to get that cleared place to throw a spark. Other than that, it's pretty cool. I would call it a "dolled up" prodigy.....lol

i have the folding sheath knife. it seems pretty pretty durable. not too expensive. razor sharp out of the package nice grippy rubber handle. no complaints here

edit: did i say it was sharp? i just sliced my finger open with it. :D

Most people call it the "Bear grylls ultimate survival knife", and kinda react to the word "survival". Kinda like "they should not call this thing a survival knife" and stuff along those lines.
As fare as I know, it does not say "survival" anywhere on it, but I might be mistaken.

Ok, so I've got a question. There are those that say that only "non-knife people" would like the Gerber Bear Grylls knife. So does that imply that the the people on this forum who, in fact do like the Gerber Bear Grylls knife are non-knife people?

Just curious :)

I reckon. I actually like the BG fixed blade, so I must be a "non knifer"?
