Gerber Big Rock Surprise

Ive got a Gerber Profile (china) $17. $17! I couldn't pass it up. I have beat the crap out of that thing.
Dug for worms with it (fishing with my son), hacked through drywall, cut through a bunch of thick plastic boxes at work. It has held up great. The sheath fell apart but I made a kydex one. Gerber/Benchmade/Kershaw, etc....all have their cheap imports, but Gerber gets the worst rap for it for some reason. ?? Maybe cuz they offer SO MANY imports. I dunno.

Hey, thanks guys for the comments and compliments.

I have been wearing this knife to work in my kydex rig since I got it. It carries really well. Only gets the occasional chore but hasn't pooped on me so far, zip-ties, clam packs, etc... Thinking about more and doing some sheaths as gifts.

Hello All,

Is everyone still pleased with his Gerber Big Rock? I have had one for a few years now, and I love it. I know it is 440A and not some "awesome" steel, but mine has performed great. I am curious as to your thoughts on the knife after 2-3 years of owning and using it.

Like a lot of folks on this forum, I wrote-off Gerber a long time ago.

I have had more than enough negative experiences with their products over the years.

But this looks like a good "beat-the-hell-out-of-it" knife, even if the sheath is garbage.

Edited to add:

440A is for situations where one wants or needs stain resistance over edge-holding because of the high chrome content (16-to-18-percent).

Such as kitchen and dive knives.

Just a quick update to this:

I bought one and am rather impressed with it so far. The sheath is better that I figured it would be too.

I haven't cut anything with it yet.

Can anyone tell me the blade thickness on this knife? Sturdy tip? Not a big deal on either, but just curious. I have a Profile and find that it was a bargain, so this one has me interested.

Thanks, G. Scott H.! Beefy enough indeed. I admit, I tend to be a bit rough on beater blades (but, that's why they're "beaters", I guess :p), and thin tips are usually the first to go.
