My mate who is'nt really into knives ( yet ) came into work today and showed me his Gerber big Rock knife that he has just bought for hiking and camp use.
I have to say that on first impressions it appears a nice functional knife for the money. It had a full flat grind and looks like it would slice well.It has a full tang and the handle felt quite user friendly.
For that money you aren't going to get any state of the art steels but if you don't have bundles of money to spare then this blade might be worth a look.
I have told him he must bring it on our next hike and I will try it out and give you my opinion of it during use !!!!;)

looks to me like it could be pretty cool for a low-price user.

watch out for really thick edges though...i don't know if it was just the model that i had or what, but the edge on mine was really thick, so that i had trouble cutting much of anything. seems to work alright though since i thinned it up.

D'ya mean that the cutting edge was ground too shallow ?

the primary grind was good enough, but before the edge bevel was put on it was...i'm just guessing here without calipers etc...maybe close to 1/8" thick? and then the bevel was at about 45 degrees inclusive i'm guessing...so the edge was closer to a splitting wedge than a knife in my opinion.

still a fine blade, just needed some thinning out...which i do to almost every new knife anyways, so take it with a grain of salt.

This knife was on my 'To Get' List before I started coming here and getting snobbish. :)

I have a Big Rock and it's a very good knife for the money. I have had it for a year and used it a fair amount.
