Got some questions on Gerber for you people:

1. Would you say more people like gerber than hate them?
2. Would you pick the lmf 2 or the prodigy for a multi purpose shtf/hunting knife and why?

Yep thats it. I got my heart set on getting a gerber. Thought I might get one of two of their best blades. Please don't recommend any other blade because its no help for me at all. Thanks in advance:)

I can only speak for myself, but I strongly dislike Gerber knives. More specifically, the way that they are marketed and the mystery steel they use in most of their knives.

1. I think more people buy Gerbers than there are people like or hate them combined. Still doesn't make the majority of their blades good, but they stay in business so who am I to judge?
2. The answer is always buy both!

I would choose the LMF II over the Prodigy (I own a one).
But know this: the material covering the handle closest to the hilt will eventually become destroyed after repeated hits from batoning.
There are better "survival" knives out there, but if your heart is set on a Gerber LMF II, don't pay more then sixty dollars for one.
Some would say don't buy one period.

I've owned a few Gerbers including the LMFII and am very underwhelmed. I don't think their use of under-performing mystery steels does their designs justice.
If you're going to buy one I would suggest also getting a quality inexpensive knife for comparison :) enjoy

I have both the LMF II and Prodigy, and to me, the Prodigy makes more sense as a "Jack of All Trades" fixed blade for my purposes. The size and weight make it more practical, and I find it more comfortable. Same kind of steel (420HC) for both, so that's not the deciding factor.

As for how many people love or hate a knife, that's unimportant. People have different preferences for their own reasons, which only matters to me if those reasons are the same as my own.

1. Who knows. Doesn't really matter.
2. Prodigy for sure. What Inazone said (seems like we are doing a lot of agreeing today). Also, prodigy is full tang.

Don't get a gerber, get an Esee :p

I had two LMFII's, one had to be replaced because the handle was shredded and I sold the second. It's not necessarily a SHTF knife in my opinion. If Gerber put as much effort into perfecting the LMFII as they did "improving" the Bear Grylls knife they would have a homerun. A better survival/SHTF knife in my opinion is the ESEE-6.

Yup. Couldn't agree more. There is plenty of evidence out there that the plastic on the handle of the LMF is easily broken. Certainly not what I would want if the S ever H-ed the F. Unfortunately I believe the prodigy has a similarly designed handle. I don't have an LMF but I do have two prodigys as backup/emergency bob blades.

The above is correct. Save up and look at the Esee 6. A more budget friendly option would be something from becker. Even less expensive would be condor.

Most knife knuts won't touch Gerber with a ten foot pole. The people who buy Gerber products are a combination of those looking for something cheap and the uneducated mass. There's a difference between cheap and inexpensive. Personally, I will never own a Gerber so I can't steer you in any particular direction.

I love my Gerbers!
I love my LHR that resides within reach of my bed.
I love my Defacto that resides in my backpack.
I love my Paraframe that is little, easy to open and non-threatening.

I think the LMF II and the Prodigy would probably work perfectly for what you have in mind. Is there a better knife out there? Maybe. Does Gerber make good knives? Yes they do.

There is a better knife out there. That is an undeniable fact.

Its not the either of the Gerbers you mentioned are terrible its just that there are much better knives available for the same amount of money. Any Becker would serve you better. The old Gerbers were great knives, now not so much. They are far down the scale of mediocre.

I used to love gerber knives, I had a USA made Gerber gator in the mid 90's (stolen unfortunately :(), and actually have an older USA made multitool. They're just fine IMO. I also had a paraframe that I used for a while that I was very unimpressed with. It wouldn't hold an edge to save its life.

I considered getting a prodigy for a while, but eventually went with a Becker (a bk2, and if I did it again, it would be a BK10 or BK16). But between the LMF and the prodigy, the prodigy would be my choice. Although I dislike serrations on a woods knife. I do vaugely remember someone posting around here that gerber now makes a knife that is very similar to the prodigy, but with a plain blade, although I don't recall what it was. So if you're set on a gerber I'd look up whatever that is and get that :).

Although, to be blunt, the gerbers were fine for what they were, but I have since discovered better knives. The best "bang" for my buck purchase so far for woods use has been a simple $12 Carbon Mora (companion). You may eventually want to look into other blades, if not just for varieties sake, and you may find there are other brands/styles that you prefer.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

1. In the general populace? Yes. Among people here? An overwhelming no.

2. Get over the "better" stuff and just get the one that looks cooler to you. Seriously, if you say you are looking for a "SHTF/hunting knife", and that you have your "heart set on getting a Gerber", you clearly just want something that looks cool (because "SHTF/hunting knife" is meaningless) and is easily available at a big box store. Get the one you think is more survival-icious. It will make you happy. That's all that matters. Nothing wrong with doing that.

I personally would not buy a gerber product. I simply think there are smarter options for the money. And I would say more people on this forum would agree than disagree.

I took a look at both knives. They are pretty much the same thing, aren't they? One's just smaller than the other.

So I'd say if you prefer a smaller shtf/hunting knife, get the smaller one. If you prefer a largerr shtf/hunting knife, get the larger one. I really dont know what a shtf/hunting knife is supposed to do.

Maybe if you tell me, I could give a recomendation based on that.

The last Gerber I bought was an Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder and that was prolly 12-13 years ago. I will not own one of their newer knives and their marketing sucks!
