Gerber Blades

If you stick with the USA made Gerber products then they make a fine product...outside of that I would say most of their stuff is junk because gerber didn't make it...

No different then any other USA knife maker...I wouldn't buy a kershaw that wasn't made in the USA

I personally would not buy a gerber product. I simply think there are smarter options for the money. And I would say more people on this forum would agree than disagree.

OMG, this just reminded me of that kids in the hall skit. 30 Hellens agree...

I think most people could give a rat's rear end about the brand of knife they buy. Most people buy a knife for a purpose at hand or because it looks cool or because they've heard of the company before. Most never pay any attention to anything but price and how sharp it is coming out of the box. Most people don't research what knife to buy, they just buy what they see at Walmart or Bass Pro in a glitzy display case. Most people know Gerber from its reputation 30 years ago and are not familiar with their current production.

Those people are Gerber's customer base.

I don't know much about the two models mentioned. I think I recall reading the Prodigy is a full tang design while LMF is not--but I could be wrong about that. Both are 420HC, I think. Decent steel but nothing special (unless it's done by Buck). Both knives look robust and will probably work fine for the purposes mentioned. I have no recommendation of one model over the other.

Yep thats it. I got my heart set on getting a gerber. Thought I might get one of two of their best blades.

I don't blame you for wanting a Gerber. They are, after all, one of the most available and affordable American knife brands with a long history and strong name recognition.

If you want one of their best blades though, may I suggest one of their imported product lines, the Gerber Silver Knight series. Made in Japan and excellent quality. They are discontinued now, but easily found at the big auction site.

If I were to select a current production fixed blade from Gerber, it would be the fixed blade Gator.

The very name Gerber denotes German origins

That's a pity as gerber knives do not reflect German methodical technical supremacy...
Anyways, I figure there are more folks out there who clamour for the brand name simply because it's been pretty well marketed and is commonly available.
Choice of Shtf gerber?
Prodigy, given the choice.
IMO, it's the Lesser of two evils.
