I've owned 3 or 4 Gerber BMF's through the years, and I'm pretty sure that the "grey sealant around the base of the blade near the handguard" that you see is where the handguard was welded to the blade/tang. The blade/tang is one piece, but the handguard was welded on, I believe.
I have a Gerber BMF that I bought new sometime in the late 80s (not long after the first Rambo movie I see the same hairline of what looks like sealing compound, although it is very hard.
I think your knife is fine. The BMF is a great knife.
