I believe there are six models of the Gerber E-Z-OUTs. Two little ones at 2.5"inches & four medium ones at 3.5"inches. Who has one of these?? What other brand/model knives do you recommend that are similar folders with thumbhole for opening & pocketclips??

Benchmade's Ascent, which IMO is a little better knife than the EZ-Out.

You might want to try the Buck Odesey I don't know if that is spelled right but you can find them out their. or a Spydico endura is a nice knife.

The Endura is twice the knife the E Z out is, in my humble opinion.

I once saw the EZ-Out with the ATS-34 blade on sale for only $30, now that's one heck of a deal!

But I agree, having handled both, the Enura is the nicer of the two.

I need a bigger bucket.

My wife carries the small version (she likes the "first production run 1 of 500" etching on it), and I used to carry the larger, plain bladed model, not the ats-34. I liked it. Yes, the spydie is probably better, however I question the BM Ascent, as the one I replaced the Gerber with had problems with the pocket clip screws pulling out and subsequently stripping. I replaced it with the Pardue 350 (which I lost shortly thereafter!). All in all, as was previously posted, if you can find the ATS-34 model for 30-40 bucks, I don't think you can go wrong.

Hehehe...i can't help it: I was at a store the other day looking at the EZ-outs, had the money, had the steel urge, and so said i'll take one...the guy either didn't like me, or some law i don't know was passed...but he wouldn't sell it to me because i wasn't yet eighteen...

, i felt like showing him the knives i had ON ME at the time, hella lot bigger than those babies...but i held back, but anyway, i went to another store and bought three enduras...i don't know if it's better steel or not...but the feel is much better...gave two away as presents..and loving mine...i just need to find a serration sharpener.

Well, hopefully the quality has gone up. I had one some yrs back and its handles at the pivot started widening in less than 3 months just from daily use. Edge was lousy, too.

My brother got the ATS34 model last year. Didn't feel any sturdier than the one I owned, and its ATS34 wasn't much of an improvement. Remember, w/o a decent heat treat, ATS34 is nothing special.

Have you been satisfied w/the ATS34? Unless my brother's model was a fluke, I'd guess Gerber just uses ATS34 as an advertising hook, IMO.

Best similarly-priced folders, IMO, are Spydie Delica w/ATS55 and the nice reversible clip; or the AG Russell FeatherLite folder (w/a very good lock) esp if you like a good heat-treated ATS34. No pocket clip on the AG Russell, but it also unnecessary as it literally weighs like a "feather," 1.4 oz. Both are much sturdier than the Gerber, I believe.

The locks on the EZ-Out's are notorious for failing. I didn't believe it until I tested the 7 of them that I had at the time. All but one failed the spine whack test.

my gerber had bad handle construction. I cracked the kraton inserts by just squeezing them together with two fingers. I sent it back and the samething happened to the second one. Get an Odessey I with a metal spine. For the exact same price, they are much stronger, and I have not been able to crack the handles or force the blade closed in spine whack tests.

How do I perform the spine whack TEST?

Where are the KRATON inserts located?

Which company makes the ODESSEY 1?

Why are the ENDURAS better than the E-Z-OUTs?

Best local retailer to buy these knifes? Sports Authority , gun stores?? Tell me.

Harikari,
the reason the endura\delica are better than
the e-z outs are..a much stronger lock.better fit and finnish, better edge holding, cuts bettr, and they do not give you the feeling they gonna come apart every second.
althogh e-z out is a gerber.. it is one of the poorly made knives i have encounterd.i can't belive a company like gerber ever produced such a thing ,i can find a few taiwan made nock offs that are better made.
if you are looking for a quality folder on a budget go for the spyderco's or benchmade ascent,or cold steel voyegers or the new outdoor edge magna or impulse in zytel.
i truly hope i did not offend any one here with a e-z out.
scorpio.

I had a small e-z out and I can tell you, a butter knive was all it was good for. I got a swiss army 'tinker' for $10 less money and 100 times the knife. I can shave hair, cut tiewraps and still shave. If it needs to have the edge touched up, two or three strokes on a stone and it shaving again. The SAK may not lock but if you are using it to cut it can't be beat for the money. SAK does have locking blades 'adventurer' is bigger than a 'tinker' with the same tools. I gave the e-z out away, IT WAS THAT BAD.

I have owned an EZout for almost 2 years now. It's an ok knife but can't be compared to knives like Benchmade. What do you want for 29 bucks at wal-mart? Opening the knife is a little awkward with the small oblong hole and its not a verry smooth opener (you can't even loosen the pivet bolt) .The factory edge was never too sharp but I have had it sharpened shaving sharp. Overall it was a good knife for a beginning. I now have a Benchmade axis lock 710s on the way and I can't wait for the upgrade... it's long overdo!

Hi Pepsiholic -- in the price range of the EZ-Out you *can* get a decent folder! Spydie Delicas can be found readily for about $30-$40, and the AG Russell FeatherLite in decent AUS8A goes for $35. W/an ATS34 that's probably much better treated than the Gerber, the AG Russell FeatherLite goes for $45, I believe. That's for a knife which is as tough as Zytel gets!

Also, note that *anything* purchased from AG Russell is covered by THE VERY BEST warranty in the industry -- if you don't like your purchase for any reason, at any time, or should it fail you for ANY reason, ANY time, you can return it for full refund. No BS. THAT makes it worthwhile to pick up one of their folders, or any of the products they make/distribute.

Also, for *under* $29, you can get a SAK w/good liner lock (Adventurer, Rucksack, etc.) Much better knife than the EZ-Out, IMO.
