Gerber Fans

Was browsing BladeHQ today and randomly stumbled on the new Gerber Edict. I glanced at it thinking to myself, "lol more 440A junk." however, I then looked at the specs. 154CM steel, and made in Portland, OR. $47 shipped online. Is this a return to form? I can only imagine Gerber is losing customers daily to the higher value offerings from ESEE, Ontario, cold steel, Kershaw, Spyderco, etc. Maybe they are finally realizing they need to actually deliver a high quality product to stay afloat.

Good lord, the ad copy for the Edict starts with: "The Gerber Edict was built with one thing in mind - combat." I'm guessing that's official adcopy, because the same blurb is seen on multiple sites where this knife is for sale. It cracked me up, and closed the window while shaking my head. Keep trying, Gerber.

It makes me sad. There are a few, a very few, pretty okay Gerber models out there. Although I rarely use it, I really like my folding Gator model. It's a pretty decent middle of the road knife. It may be one of like 3 models out there that are pretty good. And it's really a shame. First knife I got after I got my very first paycheck (I didn't blow the whole thing on knives, honestly ;) ) was a decent Gerber. It's just a shame that 99% of their models can't be decent, rather than the other way round.

I remember a time when Gerber was a lot like Buck. Now, it seems like they primarily are trying to cater to the audience who buys Emersons and Striders, the military fetishists and tacticool crowd. I can't hate on Gerber 100% because my Gator (a pic of which I still owe this thread when I get a chance) was my best, and most favorite knife, for many years during my Scouting days. But I don't carry it these days, not with so many better knives out there.

Exactly the same. I still have it and love it (in fact I have a couple) but I prefer to carry others. Still glad I have it though.

Hello from germany,
i had a lot gerbers MK´s going thru my hands .... really fine pieces but over the time i found, there is a kinda community that trade these in a circle.
There are experts to know everything and comment trades.... little strange to my feeling. The other thing is,.,....these knifes have their prices , hammern in solid rock. If you have an early Orange Handle you will hardly come over 1500usd for sale, a ´67 steel grip makes maximum 2K ..... the good times for the Raretiy are over i feel.
The catstongue models with the NON-Serrate Blade are my favourite.....unless they sold thru cutlery shoppe or fiscars....
J.

You know, one thing i still think they do right, is the mulittools. I just got an MP600 (mil issue), and love it. It technically replaced an MP400 that i ran for more than 10 years (and still works fine, with only the small screwdriver chipped).

That said, i am not a fan of where Gerber is going in the civilian world. The BG stuff is a complete turn off for me, just like SOG and Sarge (nothing against him, but they do nothing to make me want to buy the knife, and i cringe when i hear a sales guy mention either, as if it somehow makes the blades better). And more than anything, as others mentioned, i can get much better steels for the same prices through Kershaw and others. Why pay for 440A (or even 420HC) when i can get Sandvic, 154CM, etc...

I've got an older Gerber Steadfast that I kinda like. Don't know how old it is as I got it out of a little consignment store and that was 10+ years ago. No idea how long they had it. It was NIB when I got it and still is. It's very sharp but not having used it I can't say how long it would hold an edge. Bought it on a whim and so far haven't felt the urge to buy another Gerber.
