Gerber FSII blade steel?

I have a mid 80's vintage Gerber Folding Sportsman II - I can't find any information on the blade steel used for these knives. It's highly polished, fine grained and takes a sharp, durable edge.

My guess is 440C but I'd like to know for sure?

This is my all-time favorite knife! I am pretty certain that they used 440C steel on these. Great balance, great blade, great knife!
