Gerber Grylls Survival Knife vs Light My Fire Fireknife

If the choice is between only those two, the Light My Fire. I'd go with a Mora Bushcraft Survival over either of those though.

Get what you want. But if you get a BK-16, you will have a better knife. My daughter learned a lesson with a BG knife. During her testing of her brand new knife, she bent the tip. I had her do the exact same thing with my Becker with no issues. She now owns a BK-9 & a BK-17.

Might you share your reasons for preferring MORA's Bushcraft Survival over their Light My Fire?

If I'm not mistaken; the Light My Fire "Fireknife" its a Mora. Was done with Light My Fire as a collaboration....

I have nothing against the Grylls knife, but if you are willing to pay that price you should consider a dedicated firesteel + mora.

My choices would be: Light My Fire Army 2.0 + Mora Bushcraft Force

The total should still be less than the Bear Grylls Gerber.

I would buy a Mora Companion in stainless and a Bic lighter.
Unless you are going way up high in elevation where butane lighters don't want to work well.

I'm not really leaning toward the Gerber, but was weighing the option. I prefer it's sheath...

I already have a dedicated L.M.F. Firesteel, but two is one in the woods. I also have matches, lighters, and flamable materials. I thought the knife/firesteel combo would be a nice backup.

You are right, you wouldnt have to mod the sheath on the gerber at all. It has the firesteel and sharpener built right into it.

It'll all come down to personal preference, there are going to be alot of haters here on the Grylls knife. Although, I bet 1/2 of the people haven't actually used one.

I've seen alot of Mora sheathes wrapped in paracord to incorporate the firesteel, not much extra cost to go that route.

The Mora/Light My Fire Fireknife has firesteel built into grips... The Mora Survival Knife has firesteel and stone built into sheath.... I just don't care for the Mora sheath... I could live with it though.

I have seen that Mora/Light My Fire colab. I was considering it for a while.

The deal breaker for me was the blade size and the length of the tang + partially hollow handle.

That is correct.

Gladly. I had both knives but gave the Light My Fire to my younger brother. The Bushcraft Survival has a longer, thicker blade, and a more substantial handle. I'd rather have the firesteel attached to the sheath than in the handle. The Light My Fire is nice but its a bit small. The Bushcraft Survival just was more knife in my hand, felt a lot better. I believe the sheath on the Light My Fire was the same or very similar to a Mora Clipper, which I still have, and the Bushcraft Survival sheath holds the knife more securely.

The deal breaker for me was the blade size and the length of the tang + partially hollow handle.

^in a nutshell.

Both great knives but just giving my opinion. Mora is releasing/already released a Bushcraft Black which looks awesome. And I also plan on picking up a Robust soon, as I've heard great things.

I too wanted and looked hard at the Light My Fire knife. Settled on a Robust instaed, wanted the larger grip and stouter blade.

One caveat however, the Robust has a rounded spine that does not lend itself well to striking a rod. Not a huge problem as I'll just use the striker that's with the rod.

My companion came with an unfinished spine, still rough from when it was punched out. Less than 5 minuets with a dremel and a grinding wheel and it's nice and squared up and throws sparks great. Tried to use a file and it was working fine but that would have take a good 10-15 just to get an area just big enough to strike. I'm so glad I bought that dremel.

The Bear Grylls knife is made in China, and is marketed for people who watch TV and want to buy stuff.

The mora is made in Sweden, and is extensively field tested.

Bear Gryll's is awesome, but the knife is not equal to his name IMO.

The Mora Force is a great knife, it just works so well.
I have seen them with a sharpener and removable fire steel on the sheath.
Its a sweet little set up.

It's funny that I'd trust a cold steel tri-ad over bg. The serrations will chip/dent and become useless after about 5 min of light camp chores. Best value would again be a Becker or an esee. Good luck making one of those fail. However you can't buy them at Walmart or dick's, that might tell you they're better than your average car-camper's "survival knife"

Beckers, ESEE and the like are terrific but if you need a decent knife for a little cheaper and a Mora isn't substantial enough for your liking check out Condor's offerings.
