Gerber Grylls Survival Knife vs Light My Fire Fireknife

I too wanted and looked hard at the Light My Fire knife. Settled on a Robust instaed, wanted the larger grip and stouter blade.

One caveat however, the Robust has a rounded spine that does not lend itself well to striking a rod. Not a huge problem as I'll just use the striker that's with the rod.

I went with the Robust as well. File the back and slide inner tube over the sheath to hold the firesteel.

My companion came with an unfinished spine, still rough from when it was punched out. Less than 5 minuets with a dremel and a grinding wheel and it's nice and squared up and throws sparks great. Tried to use a file and it was working fine but that would have take a good 10-15 just to get an area just big enough to strike. I'm so glad I bought that dremel.

Are you talking 10-15 minutes? I file the backs of machetes/knives and it takes me less than 30 seconds. What kind of file do you use?

Yeah. It was a small file but the spine was pretty rough too. Wouldn't through sparks at all from a firesteel.

100% Agree. As much as I enjoy Grylls' television shows, putting his name on a lousy set of knives doesn't make them any better. I've got the LMF Mora and have enjoyed it quite a bit so far. Sheath is ok for me. Don't love it, but it's functional.

The Bear Grylls knife is made in China, and is marketed for people who watch TV and want to buy stuff.

The mora is made in Sweden, and is extensively field tested.

Bear Gryll's is awesome, but the knife is not equal to his name IMO.

I personally own 4 of the BG Gerber knives and use them quite frequently. one is the fixed blade w/ firestarter, one is the 3 1/2" inch, and the other 2 are the smaller pocket knives. They work great. Most of the hate comes from people that have honestly never owned one. Sorry, but if I'm gonna beat the crap out of a knife, I'm gonna spend less for more. 30 bucks gets you a 3 1/2", durable, 1/2 serrated blade, good for almost any task you can think of. I use both the 3 1/2 and pocket versions very frequently without problems. Here in Michigan the law is no knife over 3 inches can be used or carried with unlawful intent. Being a person in law school on my way to becoming a police officer however, I know that MOST officers will not give you problems as long as you aren't going around doing stupid stuff with your knives if they are over 3 inches. It is best however if you do carry one that is over that limit, just to keep it out of sight and out of mind unless it's absolutely needed. The BG knife comes with a very nice nylon sheath for conceal and carry. To date, it is thee most reliable and useful EDC that I have owned for UNDER 50 dollars.
