Gerber Harsey Steel Any Good?

I got one of these from Smoky Mountain.....

If you can deal with blue and a partially serrated blade it's a good deal for 12 bucks plus shipping. I can't remember what's stamped on the blade, but I do believe it is marked. I didn't ask why they were so cheap , but I bought two ( one for my dad) and they are NIB.

I also read a review on this model posted on an Hunting / Fishing site and the biggest complaint was the edge holding ability. So assume it's a lower grade of stainless.

I know Gerber gets a hard time around here, but it's a very nicely made knife.

The box lists the country of origin as Taiwan

I have a Gerber "Wilson-Harsey" Silver Trident and the steel is 154cm. That pretty good stuff if you ask me.

I have a Gerber Air Ranger that I carry on the waistband of my pants at work. It is light, and handles simple tasks very easily (opening letters, noxes, and so forth). I got it on close-out at Wal-Mart for next to nothing.

Gerber is owned by Fiskars, they're a big international company that manufactures in several countries.

Some Gerbers, I believe are still made in the USA. Some are made in Italy, some in Taiwan, some in China. Perhaps other places as well.

I was told by a knowledgable dealer that the steel in the Air Ranger went from AUS-8 when it first came out, to "440".

Generally when manufacturers say "440", they are referring to 440A or B.

When they use 440C, they generally say so.

So the Air Ranger today is probably 440A.
Not great steel by any means.

But for twelve bucks or so, made in Taiwan, I must say IMO it's not a bad deal for what it is.
