Gerber Kick Axe

Looks interesting, but way too many areas to break to me. I just don't trust folding mechanisms on something that will receive the amount of shock force as a hatchet.

Wouldn't mind trying one but I am skeptical.

Insufficient gains for the amount of loses. Not for me. 'Tis interesting though amigo, I'd not seen one before.

While it looks VERY cool I don't think I'd want to rely on it in the woods.

Nice and light at 18.4 ounces but totally agree with CShepherd.

Looks pretty gimmicky to me. I'll stick with my good ole' fashion hawk. I'd like to see someone else test it out though. Wear safety gear. ;)

I recall an old folding hatchet design from the 70s or 80s. That looks like they took the old design and fabbed it up to make it look new. Looks like it would be better than a SAK for chopping but not by much. I would like to see one up close before making a final judgement though. Who knows might be worth something in a kit or BOB.

I don't think I would replace my regular Fiskars or GB axes with one.

However, lets take a look at folding shovels, they have held up around the world for decades, through wars and peace, and I am sure someone said at one point that they had too many parts or they wouldn't hold up...

I think that the areas which fold would wear and become loose or be prone to failure. The design also looks clumsy. One of the reasons that the poll developed on axes was to improve balance. It would be fun to check one out when they become available but I'll stick to a Fiskars or Estwing for a light hatchet.

I've nothing against folding tools such as shovels, saws or knives but an axe ... I dunno !

It's a new Pax-Ax!

I haven't seen anyone else with one of these old ones.

their should never be a locking mechanism on an axe, I know I wont be going for it.

Probably goes alongside my folding entrenching tool. They can both stay at home i'm afraid. I replaced my folding shovel with a small regular shovel and have never looked back. All those connections, joints and parts are a recipe for one of them failing. I think the same will be true with this axe. Then I would be back to using my regular axe minus the cost of the Gerber.

It solves the longstanding problem of carrying a 12" handled....Oh Wait, there never was a problem. The only thing going against a small hatchet is it's weight, and that didn't change. Now a folding machete, that might make some sense!
