Gerber Knives

John--

You're right, it was kind of a stupid question. What I meant to say was something like... does anyone have any thoughts or experience on this particular model, considering that it is 1)a Gerber 2) a fixed, full-tang blade & 3) a skeleton frame?

Thanks for being patient with the new guy. :p

Considering the original quality question, I still have my Gerber FS II (Folding Sportsman II) and occasionally carry it for old times sake. I never re-profiled the edge and it has a relatively broad bevel but it will sharpen up to shaving capability with a little time. Those were the days.

Oh I see. I don't have any experience with their cheaper knives so I'm not sure. Haven't heard much feedback about that particular knife as well.

If you're after a good cheap fixed blade, I know that Mora knives are good choices. Not sure if their appearance would appeal to you though (total different look to the Gerber Bolt).

Hopefully, someone with the Gerber Bolt will chime in later and provide you with some feedback

Oh, and 'best knife ever' is a myth. If one existed, everyone here would have it, singing it's praises for all time.

*cough* sebenza *cough*

The paraframe specifically seems to be a design constructed primarily of weapons-grade FAIL. I hear nothing but bad things about it, even from people who otherwise defend Gerber.
I'll tell you one good thing about it: it's one sturdy mofo. It won't cut anything for you but you can ram it as hard as you want into anything without it failing.

cough cough is right as far as a seb being best lol, not imho, i prefer my spydie ti ATR to my seb, lotsa folks like those things though i have never been a huge fan myself, i had one and gave it to my son last yr when he turned 17, he has always loved them.

Gerber used to be a great, innovative knife company. They were never the same after Fiskars bought them out. I still have some great kitchen knives from the old days. All my pre-buyout field knives and, alas, a Mark I dagger (without the serrations) grew legs and walked away.

While I don't own a paraframe I have some friends who do, I don't think its a Spyderco or Benchmade by any means but all in all for the money its a good knife.

i more or less echo the sentiments of the collective. i used to feel much better about gerber. but i still say that the gator is a great beater at 25$ and I have primarily used an applegate covert ats-34 as an edc for 8-9 yrs. i use it for just about everything including tossing into pressure treated 4x4s when bored. It has required some resharpening and reshaping but I still definitely trust it in a pinch and can clean up a bad shave on an early morning.

However, n8iver, on the issue of the "bolt" tactical. I have seen a number of these on ebay all with the same descriptors (boxes may be damaged or have stickers, etc.) but haven't found any through bn'm stores or established online stores. I STRONGLY suspect that they are counterfeit. In fact, I am waiting for a response from gerber about this. They may just be discontinued. They are all marked as "made in china" and "440", and i know gerber had some recall issues with the folding knives made in china, so....
I recently purchased a "lot" on e-bay that I have yet to receive. I will post as i learn. In any case, they are dirt cheap, and at least good for party favors. I do object to the counterfeiting phenomenon... if a company wants to alienate its own customers and ruin it's own name thats one thing...

will update

The Hinderer is my firefighter buddy's favorite. Worked for cutting coax cable off his air tanks in a burning building

While not as good as they used to be, I have never felt "let down" by a Gerber product that I purchased. Part of that is that I do my homework before I buy something.

Come to think of it, most of my Gerber products were given to me. I had one of there multi-tools in college and it served me well. I was given a Harley Davidson edition Stud Gator for my 18th birthday in 1999 from my dad. I still use it to this day as the lock up is good and tight, and it takes a fine edge.

Currently, I have a Ripstop as a little beater work knife. My wife picked it up for me at Target as a "thinking about you" gift. It's made in china, but the frame lock is as tight as my Benchmade or my Kershaw. The edge is so-so, but for a little knife for prying staples out and digging around in places that I wouldn't want to subject my good knives to, it wasn't a bad buy I suppose.

I'm thinking really hard about picking up one of those new Mark II's when they come out.

I haven't had any problems from Gerber products.

I use an LMFII for a camp knife and it's held up wonderfully. It's used, abused, and put up wet...no problems yet.

I've still got one of the first multi-tools Gerber made. I've had and used it for 15+ years...had absolutely no problems whatsoever out of it. I still believe it to be the best multi-tool I've handled (that includes the Leatherman Wave).

Some of their folders may be crap, but they still put out good knives (much better than CRKT IMO...I've had no luck with their junk).

Well up until I really start getting into custom made knives, I liked Gerber a lot. I carried a BMF for years and years and beat the crap out of it, and ever had an issue with it. My wife still carries her LMF.

The Freeman folder and Fixed blades are also decent enough knives. I wouldnt give up my Ranger or RAT or Gossman blade for a Gerber, but I have found nothing wrong with them as general production knives.

gerber appears to be going the way of many comapanies before it but there are still some good ones suchas the gerber Lmf 2

I wish someone would be ballsy enough to buy and review the Torch. I like Hinderer's design and I haven't been able to score an XM-18 yet.

I have gotten close to buying one on several occasions but there are a lot of other good knives for the same money ($30-35) that can be had, so I haven't convinced myself to plunk down the cash.

I dig the mark I and II's, and just had an auto given to me that's very solid. I love the hatchets and the big brush chopper as well.

n8ivefl, they are referring to this knife, called the "paraframe". It's not a type of handle. I haven't heard of any feedback on this knife so I don't know what its like

F'ing hate that knife:D

you like what you like if it works for you then forget what everybody else thinks!
cheers

and thats the point, I have a folding gator clip point that sits in my car kit, Ive beat the snot out of that knife, It takes a good polished edge and keeps working. also had a freeman fixed that I tore apart because the better part of a year I couldnt get it sharp and I got sick of looking at a knife that wouldnt cut:p:D

over all the company sucks now, but they make a few kickers, their multitools, hatchets and the odd folder are made well.

One knife I would love to have would be a Yari, the old one.

I still carry the same 450-EZ USA (modified thumb hole) everyday for well over 5 years. Electrical instalations ... scrub brush... motorcycle tires... cactus... boxes... I have wacked all sorts of everyday stuff.... slide it down my $2 ceramic stick off and on and cut some more. Cost a whopping $12....

I think this may answer some of your question...
