Gerber Multi Tool 800 Vs. Leatherman Wave

I have used, and destroyed, many a Leatherman Tool in my days in the USAF. I started to wise up after I was issued the Multi-Plier. Simply put, it worked. And it worked better than anything I had used prior.

In my profession it is best to have a tool that will take a friggin' pounding and still work as it was meant. I did not have that confidence in the Wave. I "waved" goodbye to it after a week. Some of the low points included the "handle jiggle". Nothing on a tool should jiggle. Only strippers should jiggle. This was a major cause of my disappointment. The damn thing twisted and was never the same since. I found this to be true of all Leatherman tools except the Super Tool.

Now the Gerbers are what I expect in a hard abuse tool. The Legend series is the best overbuilt, tough as nails tool I have ever owned (and I've owned alot). The carbide cutters, overbuilt handle, spring loaded pliers, and easy of tool manipulation sold me the minute I picked it up. I've cut through door security chains, chain link fence, and steel security cable with ease. I have yet to turn the cutters around. Not once has a Gerber tool ever rattled, jiggled, or shaken loose on me. I have even used my tools as door chocks (open the tool, spread the handles and jam it into the hinge area).

I love the Legend Series so much that I went out and bought the smaller Urban Legend today. All together I have 7 different configurations of Gerber tools.

I was surprised to hear that you carried the Leatherman, because a friend of mine on active duty mentioned using the Gerber Military Provisional Tool. (Supposedly it was originally Government-issue only but is now available to the general public.)

All the same, I'll stick with my Leatherman's and hopefully soon a SOG PowerLock to boot! :D

one45auto,

I was in from '89-'93. The Leatherman tools were a standard supply item from '??-'92. I could get a new one anytime I wanted (which was about every 3 months). Gerbers were not even in the inventory yet. I was issued the Gerber in '93 prior to my deployment to the Gulf. It was the blunt nose 600 series that did not have locking tools. I still have that tool today. I can't say that about the Leathermans. The Gerber MPT is the standard supply item. This was added to the catalog after my enlistment was up. I believe supply started to carry these in '94-'95, though I could be mistaken. But regardless, I will take a Gerber over a Leatherman any day of the week. Speaking of which, I am eagerly awaiting the new MP650 Evolution with the interchangable jaws.

Me too, I would really like to hear what you think about the MP650 when you get it.
Maybe you could post a review for us.

Edited: Well I posted this just befor I sent my leatherman wave in for repairs.
Now the I have seen how good leatherman warranty service is I would have to change my vote back to the Wave.

I sent my leatherman wave in and two weeks later I had in my hands a brand new wave with improvments made over my old one.

Leatherman wave all the way! :D :)
