How does the numbering system on the spine work? Is #1 the 1st year of production, etc. What would would be the year for a Paul model 2P with no number in the spine (old style thicker blade). Also - What does 2P mean as opposed to 2PM - thanks
My understanding is that the older style Pauls (late 70's to mid 80's) had the number on the spine to indicate the number of years after the original run was made. So, if the original run was in 77 (which I believe it was, although I'm not positive), the knives made in 1978 would have a "1" in the spine, 1979 would have a "2", and so on. I think that I remember someone saying that the original run of Pauls didn't have a number in the spine. Mine has a "2" stamped into the spine.
As for the model number, I assume (however, on this one, I'm really not sure) that the "2P" indicates the style of knife, with "P" indicating a plain (stainless steel only) handle. I think "2PM" might indicate micarta handle scales. My Paul is a "2P", and has only the stainless steel handle. I hope I have been able to help you at least a little after you've waited so long for an answer.
