Gerber quality going down?

I use to think Gerber was good until I handle a Kershaw. Sad thing is that the Gerbers felt no different than some of the Tac-Force folders that are floating around flea markets. I would have love to own a vintage piece to feel the quality of the it's golden days.

No. I only buy good china switchblades. S & W/ boker magnum and any other name brand switchblades I can get that cheap. Will they cost more than a dollar each?? there are you happy now?? this post is about Gerber being made in china so why are you trying to cause trouble with me??

So you are a dealer but not in Gerber knives. Right? I haven't looked at any of the Gerber imports. But I do remember when they made good knives of respected quality.

How can something go down when it hasn't been up in 20 years?

I was checking out knives at the local store and this guy comes in wanting a folder with a really strong lock for his eight year old. I wanted to meet him halfway and truly point out the strongest rated lock at the best price so I pointed out the Cold Steel stuff. He's like that's nice, and asks the dealer if he has any Gerber paraframes. I'm just sorta left shaking my head, wondering why he prefers buying a high-grade pot metal knife that is likely going to fail and hurt his son.

I tried to like em. They just won't stay sharp, you have to fight to put an edge on half of them cause it seems like contact with AIR dulls the blade, and they invariably get loose or wobbly with blade play, handles breaking etc. And their only excuse is "well they're cheap and people buy them like crazy".

The only thing I can say good about the paraframe is that I seriously doubt that lock will fail. Doesn't matter if it does or doesn't though considering the blade won't hold an edge sharp enough to do any damage :P

My experience with s&w knives has been incredibly awful. Worst knives on the market aside from no name Chinese crap.

In 1975 I bought a twin edge Gerber boot knife right out of high school. Took it on cross country trip to find myself. I still have it.

I don't think Gerber has ever made anything quality, except maybe baby food.

When I was in high school back in the late 70's the Gerber Sportsman, and Puma lockbacks were the knives to have.
I bought a Gerber Sportsman ll and a Puma Deer Hunter in HS, and both were top notch all the way.
I also bought a Buck 110, and Schrade LB5 back then, and they were made well too, but not like the Gerber and Puma(IMO).

I had a gerber or two years ago, when I started to get more educated on knives/steel, it bothered me that I couldn't find the steel type on the packaging. Most of the people I work with that have no idea about steel or good knives carry a gerber. I threw out the remaining gerber knife I had about 3 years ago.

I pull out an endura 4 in ZDP at work and go to cut something, this guy stops me to look at my knife.... then insinuates it's garbage cause he has never heard of spyderco, then proceeds to pull out a gerber para frame (proud as could be) and hack the box I was breaking down to death. Gerber still has lots of people buffaloed into thinking they make a quality product.

I use to be a very long time ago. I just posted that to make Tripton mad. no more. when I was a dealer about 20 years ago I dealt with a lot of Gerber knifes and they where a USA company at the time. they made some darn good knifes. I think they still do. from my under standing there switchblades are made in the USA. they don't have one made in china do they?? I am not a dealer any more.

So the moral of the story is Chinese knives are the awesome unless they are Gerber, then they are junk because they are made in China?

"Good"? The knives you mention are in NO way superior to the Gerber stuff that is being stamped out today, and in many cases, might be worse. Every Boker Magnum automatic I have touched has been junk, every S&W has been horrible, and any other "name brand" switchblade is equally bad. It is pretty common knowledge around here that China made automatics are not worth the cash you pay for them, but knowledge is never in surplus with anyone who buys mass amounts of crappy Chinese switchblades.

Any Gerber will cost you more than a dollar. Please explain these sentence fragments so that I know what you are referring to.

Well, you failed there. Posting something for the sole purpose of making a member mad? Is that not the definition of trolling?

Since it's been 20 years since you were a dealer, I am sure that the mass numbers of garbage switchblades that you sell from your collection are at least 20 years old, right? There (sic) that old, aren't they? These "knifes" that you sell?

Get it together man.
