The clamshell aisle at Bass PRO here is slowly being overtaken with Gerber, so you know its a price deal. Before finding this forum a couple of years ago, I was certainly the Average Joe referenced above. I bought a Gerber, very Muy Macho looking folder to carry in the glove compartment.
In helping our son on a move, I got out my "Muy Macho Gerber" to show everyone how a "real" man cuts up moving boxes and proceeded to lose the edge in about 3 boxes
I atoned 2 years later on another kid's move with my Caly in ZDP. It never blinked!
