Gerber

The Gerber 800 / Legend / whatever you want to call it is a damned good tool. I've used mine in my previous job as a service engineer for a number of years, & it's never let me down. Yes, the screwdrivers are a bit soft for my liking, but I haven't broken any. I replaced the carbide saw as it didn't cut cleanly. I've seen Leatherman have caught up in that dept. Maybe even taken the lead as theirs takes cross type rather than hole type blades. Hole type saw blades are hard to find on the shelf in the U.K.
Just my 2p worth.

The old Gerbers could pinch your hand, but not the new Gerbers.
The "pinching problem" was solved at least 8 years ago.

I have used many multi-tools over the years...
Leathermans:
SuperTool
PST
Wave
And several Juice models

SOG Power Pliers

Victorinox SwissTool

Gerber Legend

But the one I always come back to is the Gerber Pro-Scout.
I find that it has the best selection of tools that I really need.
I don't need to turn screws all that often, so the tools I usually use on any multi-tool are the pliers, saw, file, scissors, and blade.
I seldom need to access the tools in a hurry, so I don't mind having to deploy the pliers and open the handles to get to the tools.
If I need a blade quickly I always have my Benchmade 710 in my pocket.
I also like that all of the tools lock open and never clump together.
And when using the pliers, the handle is extremely comfortable on my hand.
The saw blade coupler is pure genius and allows me to carry a wood jigsaw blade in the coupler, and a metal jigsaw blade in the sheath.
I used to dislike how the tip of the pliers sticks out of the handle when not deployed...until an EMT told me how he once used the protruding tip to break a car window.
I've never had any problems with rusting.
I've never had any problems with any of the tools breaking either, with one exception...I broke flat-tip screwdriver while trying to pry a rivet out of an aluminum ladder!

Allen.

I've used a Pro Scout 600 for a number of years. Before that, I used one of the original Leatherman tools, which has since broken. I switched to Gerber from Leatherman because of the shoddy design on the original Leatherman tool--the pliers simply weren't designed right. Who in their right mind designs pliers, a tool for gripping things, with two sharp edges on the outside of the each handle?

The small standard screwdriver was broken using it to remove a screw that broke another small screwdriver, and had to be drilled out. The knife blade I broke re-grouting a shower.

I never got around to replacing the Rem-Grit with another type of blade, and now that I'll be sending mine back to Gerber I pretty sure they'll just replace the whole tool.

All in all, great tool. I've been tempted to buy one of the models with spring-loaded pliers, but don't like the lack of offered tools on those models, or the looks of the Legend.

The only thing that's bothered me about multi tools in general is the stupid positioning of the screwdriver bits. The asymmetrical handle makes it uncomfortable to use as a screwdriver.

I have considered the new Gerber Diesel, but I wish they had kept the saw-blade coupler.

Maybe I can take the one from my Pro-Scout....?

I have a deisel its an ok multi. I carry it in my pack. I have about 5 different gerbers. I have one I got about 12 years ago. Went thru 4 years in a steel mill and two deployments in the Navy. I like the blade design on the deisel, the serrations are wicked and great for cutting straps or webbing. The blade lock on it broke right after I bought it. I sent it back to Gerber and They sent me a new one w/ bits. I think I have so many gerbers because everytime I turn around the Navy is issuing me a new one. Right now I am carrying a SOG and absolutly love it. A little more expensive but worth it.

What SOG do you have?

My only experience with SOG multi-tools was with a Power-Plier, and I hated it.
The tools would clump on one side and just flop out on the other side.
The gears would dig in to my hand while applying pressure with the pliers.
I just hated it.

The Powerlock. That clumping problem can be fixed with brass washers and the flopping out out is just an adjustment problem. SOG's are about the easiest to adjust. As far as the gears digging in, I guess it has never bothered me because I have never had to apply that much pressure without gloves. I guess I was talking about the overall tool's heft and sturdy design.
