The Sportsman's Guide has been offering German Army issue SAK's for $6.97. I ordered 3 of them and about 3 days later got them via USPS priority mail. They were described as being excellant condition but I found this to be some what optimistic. 2 of them had typicle 3" spear main blades and probably the most efficiant saw I've ever seen on a pocket knife. The 3rd one had a spey blade and a file molded into the same saw blade. By the way, in addition to being a great saw, the end had sort of a hook that looked to be a combination bottle opener/can opener/screw driver. The edge of the main blade appeared to have been sharpened with a file or a brick but a couple minutes on the Lansky Sharpener fixed that. Overall, if your looking for a working pocket knife with SAK (Victorinox) quality, you can't beat the price. I had one question however, on two of the knives, the saw blades had a spring steel clip on guard. How come?

I think the guard is so you don't saw up your fingers while opening your brewski or Chunky soup (sauerkraut?).

I have a German Army folder with the same metal "clip" on the saw blade. The intention is to protect the user when using the bottle opener/screw driver tip.

el cid nailed on the blade cover. On more than one occassion I have had saw to finger contact after popping the cap off a cold beer. Trust me, it isn't real pleasant. Funny thing, seems to happen more often after the third or fourth brew. I've never used the screwdriver and IMO you would have to desperate to do so without that saw cover in place---especially if the screw was really tight. I also picked up a pair of these from Sportsman's Guide and agree about the condition of the blades. One of mine almost had a kriss shaped blade but in the vertical plane not the horizontal and both were to dull to cut hot butter. A little work on a diamond file and a finshing on Crock sticks took care of that. The other thing I noticed was that on mine the saws appear to have been unused and since that was the reason I bought mine I was quite happy. Daryl, how were your saw blades?

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

Yeah the good old army knife.
I think i used it more then any other knife i got. It was the first knive i own.
Is there a mark on the blade Daryl?
The mark on my original is "B&H Rostfrei"
The steel is of course not a 420v but it is not too bad.
There is no can opener on the saw. Its just a bottle opener and a screwdriver.
There is feature that you forget to mention:
there is a little drill ( we call it Bohrahle)
for piercing leather or drill holes in wood and open knots.
@Paul Davidson: what the hell is brewski ;-)isnt it russian food??
we only got our EPA (its the same as MRE but more tastefull because we got some extra cookies in it ;-))

My model is stamped Mil-Tec by Sturm, Rostfrei Germany. I understand several makers produced these knives for the German army, including Aitor of Spain.
