Get a Buck

Cool story. I really like those USA made buck slip joints. Sadly no stores near me sell them so I havent had a chance to try one out. Ill be sure to pick one up if I ever come across one :)

Uh oh. Must have been my doppelganger again. I have a full beard with not much color left in it. I carried a Camillus made Buck 303 every day for more than a decade as a young man. And I still carry a Buck stockman a fair amount of the time. Going to have have a word with that doppel feller.

Thanks Andrew -

I came home from Blade with two more Bucks for my collection.

This one is a 305 experiment with black delrin - it's a cute but capable little knife for sure -

I have always been a "Case Guy " for traditionals, but I gotta say...I am pleasantly surprised by the Buck 371g I picked up a few weeks ago. Maybe because it's cheap ($22), and I am hesitant to use my few Case's due to their rarity out here.........but I would definatly recommend them.

I gotta agree with the old man, I like my Buck knives :) Well, and I like my Case, GEC, AG Russell, Queen, Schatt and Morgan too :D

Maybe the ghost was the you from the future talking to yourself!

I have a chairman series buck Stockman I am carrying. It is a great knife. If I wasn't knife crazy I bet it would last forty tough years in my pocket

Andrew,

There is no question

If this gentleman took the time to come and visit you
Then take his advice and buy one

It is very important to encourage meetings with gentlemen like this
And taking their advice makes it easier for them to return

I like Case knives, and am more of a Victorinox guy (can't beat their quality, and consistency, plus from a utility standpoint, SAKs are in a league of their own), but nothing makes me feel more safe and secure then having a Buck in my pocket. This past birthday, my wife bought me a Buck 371 that my youngest daughter picked out for me, and it is such a tank!! I have owned 303s and 373s before, but never a bigger Buck. I always heard stories about how much people loved their 301/371s and now I understand. They are an interesting size. Bigger then the Case medium Stockman, but smaller then their large Stockman. A very comfortable size, useful in just about ANY situation, and beautiful to look at, with it's brass and wood. I like these better then the 301s from an aesthetic standpoint, and don't miss out any from a functional standpoint. I gotta agree with the old man ghost guy. Even if it is not your EDC, get a Buck. You certainly won't regret it.

Thank you for all the replies. I tend to agree with those who said that I should listen to that old man--

Are the new Cadets thicker than the old Camillus models due to the additional spring?

I do own one Buck...a Companion model that I never carry due to a proud pin in the handle that is about as sharp as the blade. The old man's advice convinced me to send it back to Buck to correct the issue. But still--

The Cadet is calling my name.

(...)Are the new Cadets thicker than the old Camillus models due to the additional spring? (...)

I don't think they're significantly thicker. I don't have one of the newer-gen Buck 300-series, but looked at a new 301 at a dealer a while back. It reminded me of what Case did with their '47 pattern stockman, which also used to be built on 2 springs, but newer versions are made with 3. The blades & springs on the newer models are thinner than they used to be on the older 2-spring models, so the extra 'layer' in the build doesn't add much to overall thickness, if anything at all.

I'm almost certain member '300Bucks' has addressed this in one of his posts before. Maybe even with side-by-side comparison pics of the 'new vs. old' models.

Edit: See the thread linked below. There's a comment in it, pointing out that the newer models don't have liners between each blade. Overall thickness is therefore same or even thinner, while retaining same/nearly same blade thickness. Also, see the post from 300Bucks quoted below, with pertinent pic (click on pic to enlarge it).

this thread made me miss my 303, i'll could have it sent to me, since i'm not home, or i'll just buy another one soon...how could that hurt? :D

Wow that man was passionate about Buck. I do personally believe in ghosts, and if that's was one he must have really wanted youto have the best of the best.

I have a scout-style Imperial that I carried for twenty years.

I have a Gerber Silver Knight that replaced it in my pocket, and which I also carried for more than twenty years.

I have no doubt whatever that a Buck folder would last for forty years of carry.

If someone would guarantee me that I would live to the end of the experiment, I would at once select a Buck folder and prove that it would handle forty years of carry.

And then, at age 102, I would report back to you all on whatever replaces the Internet, using my gesture-controlled Trust The Force wrist-top computer.

And the knife would be fine.

And I would be happy to pass it on to the next person ready to commit to a forty-year carry experiment, proving to the young whippersnappers that steel can be every bit as good as that new-fangled flexi-ceramic that everyone's all ga-ga over.

Great story! Although I can't grow a beard I'm almost old enough to be that guy, but like someone else remarked in a USAF hat! I gave my first and only Buck, a 110 that I bought in a BX in around 1973. to a leatherworker here in Mexico 16 years ago. He was to fit and make a pouch for it. Instead he sold it and a small gerber lockback that my son had given me. I need to "Get a Buck" to replace it.

I have both. The 3-spring 303 is the same thickness as the old 2-spring Camillus.

This is a poor comparison shot, but it is all I have at the moment. You can see that the main spring on the Camillus is extra thick.

Thank you David and Frank for posting those comparison photos--
I think I like the look of the two spring better, but I understand the advantages of the three spring design.

There is a store in town that carries Buck. If they have a Cadet in stock, I will take that as fate's way of telling me it's mine.
