Get a Sebenza?

Part of why I'm interested in a Sebenza is the shop video that CRK released... The attention to detail and quality seemed really apparent.

But, much like a guy getting ready to jump out of an airplane... I'm having some second thoughts about the 500 dollar price tag.

I'm curious if people really think that the Domino will still be available at current day prices in 2, 4, 8, 12 years from now.

History has shown that the Sebenza's price has been relatively stable and that warranty prices for new blades has also remained pretty much flat.

I think something can be said for a knife that has a company willing to stand behind a knife a decade or more old that may come in for warranty work.

I decided to get a good knife to commemorate a life-change - my first SS retirement deposit. The choice was between a then new LionSteel SR1 and a CRK Umnumzaan. Neither was available at the time - except for a Wilson Combat 'StarTac' version of the Umnumzaan, which had just arrived at WC - I had mine in two days - what a knife! I still don't feel 'worthy' of it. I average carrying it - in a pocket sheath (Vanity - in pocket carry had added 'patina' to the knife.) - once a week or so. I still wanted a Sebbie... a small one.

5/11 found me at my local sharp thing emporium, where I bought a new BM 480-1 Shoki (CF and m390!) and a fresh and pricey Microtech Ultratech double edged OTF knife (Legal to buy here - not so much to carry!). The salesman had put a bug in my ear... they had finally gotten a shipment of small Sebbies in the new S35VN steel in. I got as far as the first traffic light before making a U-turn. I had just spent within a dollar of what that small plain Sebbie would have cost. He traded even - just picked up an unopened box and bagged it. My wife drove as I perused my new Sebbie for the first time. Oh, she had the salesman put the pair of new knives up for her - she gifted me them a couple of months later on my birthday. The Shoki sees some carry, but I had to search for the Microtech - I hadn't seen it since we moved last summer. I used the small Sebbie to cut out a coupon in the grocers yesterday - and to open a new vitamin bottle when I got home. It gets used.

Oh, I did buy a LionSteel SR1 at BLADE 2012. It's been out of it's box several times since... I saw it boxed in a drawer Saturday - I have yet to carry it.

Yeah, get the Sebbie... and leave room for the ZT-0560 (I got the brown one - 0561!)... you'll eventually get it.

Get the Sebenza, it's probably the best functioning knife I have ever owned...and I've owned a lot of them.

I've been out of knives for years now, just starting to get back into things a little. I used to have lots of nice custom knives...some of which I now see command drastically higher prices. Sure wish I would have kept that Hinderer XM I bought brand new for $350....looks like they go for well over a grand now. Wow! Anyway, I've had knives from Kirby Lambert, Rick Hinderer, Tom Mayo, JW Smith, Scott Cook, Strider, and many more. None has ever been functionally better than the Sebenza and none more consistent (I've had multiple from every one of those makers except Scott Cook). Honestly, the Sebenza is a better and more consistently constructed knife than 85% of the customs I've had and after having all of those it's still the knife I'd choose to put in my pocket today. After carrying a small Sebenza for years I sent it back in for a refinish and it came back looking brand new, sold it for quite close to what it cost me brand new back in the day (though I wish I hadn't sold it....only did because I had lost interest in knives...it wasn't replaced by anything).

So, anyway....of all the amazing knives I've had...the Sebenza is probably my favorite and I'll have to get another one some day. I'm getting some interest in knives again but my interest is really limited to the Sebenza and Bose slipjoints these days. Might as well just stick with the best.
