Maybe some of you read my thread about ideal size flippers, but ive decided on what custom flipper i will be getting.
Ive decided on a Thorburn for my first custom flipper.
I will be keeping my eye out for an l50 that i like if i fine one.

I will prob have some left over money, what do you guys say you give me suggestions on midtechs i can start researching and looking in to.
So far the only ones i have looked intoo are the olamic.
Id like to get a list from you guys to check out.

I would like it to be a flipper as well and also around 3.5in blade.
I will need to stay at $500 or lower, as thats all i will have left to spend, lol.

Thanks for any suggestions

Supposedly, Brous Blades are midtechs. I have read good and bad things about them, some of the designs are pretty cool though.

As for good midtechs at the $500 range, the Gavko Mako (produced by Millit), the Ferrum Forge 200-piece in-house runs (they've now moved to 25-piece runs in the $900+ range), and Les George's VECP are all good midtechs, albeit a little more difficult to get a hold of than Koenig and Olamic knives. Then again, Koenig and Olamic are good in my book, so you could just go for that and you'll have an easier time tracking them down or ordering one to your own specifications.

High end production and midtechs are blurring a bit right now. Olamic, Koenig, and CKF are kind of on that line. Liong Mah and Todd Begg Steelcraft are produced at an extremely high level of refinement by Reate. Similar price points and very tight QC.

Brad Southard AVO...
...and compare the size of his flipper tab with that of the Olamic 247. I have owned two AVO's; great knives. I have looked at Olamic and they look interesting, but that darned flipper tab sticks out like a sore thumb. It just bugs me; that's all.
BTW, if you just bought that Thorburn Caddie, why do want a Chevy?

I guess its a bit of being a little crazy, and liking a variety.
Ive never owned a midtech nor a custom, so i figured why noy get one of each and then sell off most of my productions.
Also, sometimes i might not want to get the caddie all messed up when i want to go 4 wheeling, so ill take the chevy. Hah

Okay, I get that. One's a barbeque knife, or to carry at a wedding, and one to actually do some work with.
I was a bit snide and I'm calling the kettle black...., and I shouldn't have.
You make good sense...you should do exactly what PLEASES YOU in this hobby; nobody else.
Pure logic often gets in the way, and has no place in having fun with your hobby.

Sonnydaze Sonnydaze - I see what you mean about that flipper tab, it does look quite massive now that i look at it. They could really shave that down a bit.

They do have some really nice looking knives though, thats for sure, and the ability to sort of make my own design so to speak is quite intriguing. The nuclear pickle they have in thier gallery was my favorite.

One that is really speaking to me right now is the CKF Ossom, i know its not a flipper, but i really like that thing, sort of reminds me of a stormtrooper, lol.

Can someone define midtech? They sound like nothing more than production knives to me. Is a spyderco midtech when it's manufactured in China and sharpened in Golden? What about the Massdrop Falcon? An RJ Martin made by ZT? How much would RJ have to touch each knife to be considered a midtech? What about Olamic? Who exactly in the company needs to make some portion of the knife?

There are so many and the lines are greyed as to what a mid tech is. To make a truly comprehensive list would be difficult.

The term is pretty blurry these days.

To my a midtech has always been a custom design/pattern that has the components produced 3rd party and the final fitment, finishing and/or grinds are done in house by the maker/makers. Usually a midtech has a lot less flare and handwork than a custom.

Eg. Jeff Park makes the custom Bones all in house, a midtech bones is the same pattern w/ the blanks produced for him elsewhere. He gets the parts shipped to him, does assembly, fitment and sharpening. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong there.

I also believe Nichols does the Midtechs for Graham. Not sure if Graham actually does the final touches on those midtechs.

I have a midtech Bones and a Midtech Razel Stub, both great knives.

Short product run with the maker involved in the final product. Usually. So let's say we knives makes the knife parts designed by a maker and the maker puts it together, mods it, sharpens it, ano, etc. Finishes the blade or grind.

Something like holt blade works or Koenig make the knife on cnc from start to finish. Small batch production. Is also a term for midtech. They usually get the design from a designer.

So Hinderer, CRK, Olamic, aren't because the brand namesake doesn't touch them, and most other production pieces that are sharpened or anodized by a guy that works for a guy with his name on the blade is midtech? Or does it have to be done by the namesake person?

Who at olamic would need to touch the knife to make it midtech?

Were tim britton's knives midtechs? Quartermaster? Mantiss?
