Bravado,

Since this kerambit was inspired by you, would you please explain to me the reasoning behind a kerambit? Other than the secure-grip aspect, I don't understand this type of knife design at all.

Thanks.

Mike, the Karambit is a martial arts weapon that originates
from Indonesia so the weapon has a true martial arts system
in it's application. If I see you at one of the shows I'll
give you a demo on how it's used. It's a realativley simple
system with basic cuts but extremly effective!!

I knew they pertained to a martial art, and I have no doubt that they can be deadly in the right hands and the right circumstances. My questions are as follows:

Are they primarily slashing weapons?

If so, What makes this design better for slashing than other small knife shapes, such as my Pepper Shaker?

Also, if they are primarily for slashing: all things considered, isn't stabbing an easier (i.e., requires less motor coordination), faster (i.e., less knife travel distance required), farther reaching, more effective (i.e., creates deeper and more damaging wounds more easily) method of attack?

Are they a good choice of weapon in the hand of someone who is not a skilled martial artist?

Are they a useful shape for more general (i.e., other than defense) utility?

By the way, I'd love a demonstration. Thanks for the offer.

Thanks.

one thing that is excellent in a karambit is the ability to immediately dig in without much force. with a normal knife, its amazing how much pressure you have to put behind it to really get a deep slash in, that isnt just a surface flesh wound. try slashing a knife across a bunch of clothing wrapped around a 2 by 4 and see how hard you have to press to get deep, and think about wether or not you could do that in the pitch and boil of a fight.

with a karambit, with a properly placed slash (and even an improperly placed one), you can rake the tip across bone, and severe most of whats between the between it and the bone.

i think that that design would be one of the better edged weapons to give to someone who's had no training in how to use edged weapons for fighting, mainly becuase its good a super secure grip. nothin worse then losing your weapon in a fight, when it might hurt you because of it.

i have heard that the most used motion in large scale fights (gang fights, mob fights) is a clubbing motion, wich this would do well at, though you might break your pinky in the process. and in a knife fight, if you do nothing but slash wildly, you'll get more damage out of this then a normal knife.

its also very, very hard to take out of someones hand.

good stuff...

lol... sorry... probably should have read your post close....

from what ive seen, they are primarily slashing weapons, partially because of how well the excell at it.

most karembits ive handled make the trade off of being amazing cutters and really weak, or brutaly strong, but pretty blunt in the grind department.

the busse karambit looks like the best possible combination of the two, one of the few ive seen that id be comfortable stabing into something...

because the blade curves downward, you would have to place your stab, instead of just baseball batting it into whatever your going up against. otherwise youd end up hitting the curve instead of the tip., unless you have it reverse grip, and your coming upward (like in a bear hug type situation)

i doubt if that blade even makes it to this side of the mississippi. theres way to many infi bandits on the east side:eek:

Skunk, maybe we're just not paying enough for our knives...do you think that could be the problem?

Using a karambit only for slashing is like buying a nice new car and leaving it sitting in the driveway, only using it for its stereo system. A karambit/kerambit is a control tool first and foremost, IHMO, and there are unsharpened karambits on the market that are used as hooking, pressure point, and impact devices. Sharpened points and edges make the karambit more effective for a wider range of applications. My badge allows me to carry double-edged knives, and I carry one or more double-edged karambits routinely. When tactical necessity indicates that I must remain unrecognized as a law officer when passing through a metal detector, I carry a non-metallic karambit, which will still perform many of the functions of its metal cousins. (I am not advocating or recommending that anyone break any laws by carrying non-metallic weapons into secured areas!) Just my $0.02.

Hey yeah don't they have a length limit in Texas? And
overall stricter on knives in general more so than guns?

For general carry in public places, Texas has a blade length limit of 5.5 inches, and daggers are illegal. I would be interesting to see the Attorney General's opinion on double-edged karambits, since, to my mind at least, one of the defining features of a dagger is a STRAIGHT blade intended for stabbing/thrusting, and Texas law prohibits daggers, and not double-edged knives per se. Good things about Texas regarding knives are that self defense is still considered right and legal here, concealed fixed blades are legal, and exceptions are made to the blade length limit for sporting activities in which large knives would normally be used. And while this is not legal advice nor a recommendation to violate any law, Texas law officers are generally quite tolerant of otherwise law-abiding citizens who are found with larger knives and double-edged knives.
