Gettin' a golok

I got the itch to get a golok and I'm thinking it's time to scratch it. No, I won't be using it for self-defense, zombie killing, fighting wild animals with, scalping orcs in Mordor, or whatever end of the world do-gig that is popular right now. It'd mainly see use as a yard tool, general brush cutter, and/or camp tool.

Right now I'm look at getting a Martindale Golok, Condor Golok, or the BRKT Golok. The Valiant's just look to be awful spendy for what you get is why they're not on the list.

Martindale and Condor top the list for me and are close in price when you add in getting a sheath for the Condor.

BRKT's is very expensive, while I'm looking to not spend so much I will if it's just flat out the best. For the cost of one of the BRKT's I could really just break down and look into a custom.

Do you golok guys have any suggestions and/or recomendations?

I think you should take another look at the Valiant goloks. It's the only Golok I own and I'm quite pleased with it. You should also check out the Himalayan Imports Bamboo Cutter.

I am interested in the David Farmer Golok, but haven't gone for it yet. TonyM had a really nice one from David.

Can't say about the others... but the Barkie's are FANTASTIC and have a great warranty and service. Mike know's how to make a knife and I can say that my BRKT Golok is one fine huge Razor!!!

I have had a AKC SICUT Golok for five years now ( It's main job is trimming the hedge) But I have used it bush quiet a bit as well.
I have played with the BRKT version And I prefer the SICUT. The handle is much better for my shorter hands. The BRKT is thinner lighter and doesn't lend itself to the flick cut as well.
Got a mate who has a BRKT and he chipped his out quiet severely. The was no question on the Warrenty It was replaced, but Goloks are heavy use tools and when his broke it was in in the middle of a large emergency fallen tree clearence.

I have a Condor and a BRKT.

The BRKT is more compact, like a savage butter knife. Fully convexed. Large contoured handles. Very snug sheath. A beauty. Very quick and versatile feel. Great chopper.

The Condor QT has been an issue but mine is nice. Very nice for the price. I like the blade shape and filling handles. For 40$ why not?

I'm in the market for a Farmer, love the look of them!

I have the Martindale and the Condor. I prefer the Condor. The handle felt better to me when I used them both back to back not long ago.

i may have to wait a bit longer, but i am also in the market for a golok of some sort... i love the Farmer's and BRKT's...

That HI Bamboo Cutter looks awesome but I think it's just to thick and heavy for what I'm looking for. Very interesting knife.

As for the customs like the Farmer Golok I really do like them and if I end up going custom the Farmer is a real contender.

I really like the Gossman in A2, A2 is a plus for me because it will be exposed to salt water a lot so the extra corrosion resistance is good. My only problem is I'd want it longer than the short one, I'm thinking 12in to 14in blade length.

I'm leaning heavily towards the Martindale or Condor right now. I figure if I get one of these and I really like it in use then I'll look at a custom. At the prices these go for I could just get both and see which I like best. I've no beef with BRKT quality I own around 10 or so of them so that ain't the problem it's just the cost.

Don R, I sent you an email.

Horn Dog if you read this be sure to let me know which ones you prefer.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Can't speak for the others because I don't own them, but the BRKT golok is in the top three of my most used knives. It's a little beast of a chopper. I have a Condor on the way...or so the myth goes.

Condor: Most economical, QC has been an issue, but they are WORKING hard on it.
Martindale: Cool but needs work
Bark River Golok: Small but sharper than a light saber, quick and nimble
David Farmer Golok: Evil little bastard, probably less than a Bark river Golok too. Love the thing.
Valiant: Awesome if it is anything like the other items I've seen from them, don't get the horn it cracks, shipping can be issue.

Thats my two cents.

Don't get the Martindale unless you have a belt sander. I've only had two Martindale products (golok & machete) but both came with about the worst fit and finish I've ever seen. My Tram came with far better grind lines and wood to metal fit for far less money. Niether Martindale was usable out of the box. That's only a sample of two but I won't pay that kind of money for such a crude blade when I can get better for less money. YMMV

I've been eye balling the BRKT also, but no A2 has been a deal stopper for me, so those funds will be going towards a Jungalas instead. A little google action and I spotted a Condor in stock for $23 + shipping. For 1095, I don't see how you can go wrong at that price....

Good to know. For that kind of money they should come with a finished edge.
