How are you doing it?
Are you using clay/ITC stuff on the blade prior to the quench, after the quench during heat treating?

Thanks!

use furnace cement not ITC. I prefer a smoother material like satanite. You can get the black furnace cement at your local hardware store, I have used Red Devil and it works just fine. The thickness and temperature of the whole blade is critical. I found a thinner layer 1/16-1/8 the work best. As far as temp is concerned I have used 1425-1500 and I think the middle ground will work best. Yet it can be frustrating and the line do not always show up. Play with it a bit. Good luck

Do you do this after you quench the blade/ before you temper it?

I'm just slightly confused on this part (I think I just need to open up the book again).

Thank you,
Stefan

Apply before the quenching heat. It acts as an insulator to prevent complete transformation of the material under the clay. This is why a shallow hardening steel works best. All you have to do is prevent it from cooling for a couple of seconds. That will do it.
