Getting a Kiln: Advice Needed

Phil ,

The door opens "over center" on it's hinge, and the spring on the left (see pic Chris' pic) holds it open.

I've been using this kiln for over a year, and I can assure you, there's no problem with the door staying open in this manner.

My Sugar Creek Came in today. I went with the Orton digital controller. I need to wire the shop for 220 this weekend.

Yeeeeeee-haaaaaaaa!

One thing to consider is that the Sugar Creek does not have CSA or C/UL listing. IF your shop or house burns down' you are on your own as far as insurance goes. Looks like a decent product at a good price otherwise.

Several key "contraptions" in my shop are home built... all of them have the potential to burn my house down. This is why I really need to build a dettached shop for my business. Thanks for the heads up though, bud.

The Orton controller has a listing but I cannot find a listing for the kiln. I have emailed the company to check.

This is no different than if I would have made a kiln, anyway...

What do the guys who make kilns have to say? perhaps a thread is in order.

I actually inquired about representing the Sugar Creek in Canada - and the lack of any Canadian recognized listing changed my mind. I'm sure it's as safe as any - but if that day ever comes when a rag gets left in the wrong little corner... that stupid little sticker could have value.

Rag in the corner? Are you saying that if you have a non-UL/CSA approved piece of equipment in your shop, you might have trouble with insurance, regardless of cause? I can see if they traced the fire back to the kiln... but...

Well, I'm screwed anyway because my shop is attached to my house... that pretty much voids any claims at this point... until I get a separate shop and business insurance.

see all that fussing over the controller and you went and forgot to fuss over the length, you shoulda got the 36" deep!!!!! you'll be regretting it, Or i will because now I can only send you up to 24" pieces to HT for me :D

Rick, how about an update on the Sugar Creek Kiln? Are you happy with everything so far? This is my next big purchase....soon I hope.
