Getting a Wetterlings 19"

In an effort to give Brian Andrews an aneurysm, I decided to break down and pick up one of these. I've wanted an axe in that length for a while. I've got one of Brian's 17" S&N's, which is great, but I'd prefer just a bit of extra length. Plus I like playing with new sharp things. :D

Anyway, I don't have a GB SFA to compare it to, but I will do a quick video to compare it to the S&N and to compare my GB wildlife to a Fiskars and to a Wetterlings mini.

You will not be disappointed with the 19'' Wetterlings.I am very happy with mine. It's an excellent camp tool.It chops and splits wood very good for its size. It's very easy to sharpen to an razor sharp edge and keeps it more than enough for an axe.The handle is comfortable and the sheath is good.

How do you like your Wetterlings Mini ? They look awsome !

The Mini is a pretty solid little bugger. I wrote a review of it a while back on this forum, if you search I'm sure you'll find it. It's got a lot of heft, and functions a bit more like a cleaver than a hatchet. But it does have a good edge and bites decently. It is, however, highly outclassed by the GB mini (and the gb wildlife, but that's less fair). The GB weighs less and bites more.

I'll be looking forward to the video! I am a big fan of that size, seems to be a good compromise for most things.

Yeah, I'm thinking it will be too. Right now the competition would be the GB Wildlife, just because it works so well. The S&N is great around the house, just a little too much weight for me to haul into the woods.

I think that if the Wetterlings is reprofiled and has an even convex grind like a GB they'll be pretty much equal.

Spooky - I don't have the search function - could you please give me a link to the review of the Wetterlings Mini ?
Thanks !

I got the axe yesterday, super-fast shipping from Ben's Backwoods. He also included a neat little fresnel lens inside a "Ben's Backwoods" holder. Classy!

The grain on the haft is great, and the edge/grind was decent. It just took a minute with some sandpaper to make it shaving sharp. The only problem I have is that the alignment wasn't that great, it's tilted slightly to the side from the handle axis. Sad. But in some use it hasn't really shown itself to be an issue.

The haft has been soaking in linseed oil overnight so I'll snap some pics (or maybe a vid) sometime later when it's done.

I'd like to get one of the 32" Wetterlings. They are super cheap and that is a nice size.

I don't care much for the 19" length hatchets at all. Too long for a hatchet and too short for an axe.;)

Thanks for the review. I've never owned a Wetterling, but I do own a Grandfor wildlife and a Fiskars and a comparision between those two is a waste of time becuase there is no competition. I thought the friskars was great until I got my hands on the GB and it is like night and day, apple to oranges. No comparision.
