• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Getting along in the heat and humidity

If it's really hot when I've planned a day hike I carry up to 2.5 L of dilute, iced Gatorade in a hydration pack. Also, I wear a light-colored, wide-brimmed, vented nylon hiking hat with a black underbrim by Columbia. I believe it's called a Bora Bora Boonie.

I wear nylon shorts and boxers and a tailored, handkerchief-weight cotton shirt with the shirttail left out to improve ventilation. It's also a good idea to carry a light tarp that can quickly be set up to provide shelter from the sun if need be.

One of the best books I've read about hot weather hiking is The Thousand-Mile Summer by Colin Fletcher. Highly recommended.
