Getting Bored with Knives again.

I seem to get bored with my knives from time to time. I will just pick one to carry edc and put the rest in a box for a while, weeks or months, before I regain my interest. I think part of it is that I really can't afford to buy the ones I really want at this time. I have been having fun customizing several of my knives, but now I am done. I am starting to think about trading knives on the forum to up the excitement, but that kinda scares me. I have "trust issues." Anybody else have this problem?

Its not cause you can't afford what you really want. Collections/materialistic whether high end or low end items lose their luster very quickly.

I'm kind of the same way but instead of customizing my knives when I get bored, I try to keep them stock and offer them up on the forums in trade. It's a great way to discover new models.

Also, I learned the hard way not to do too dramatic of a customization when I get bored. I've ruined several mid to high-end knives that way. Best to keep it stock unless it is something you are definitely going to keep for yourself.

I tend to "walk away" from all my hobbies from time to time. Knife collecting in particular tends to be seasonal; it's more of a winter hobby for when the motorcycle and convertible are grounded, the fishing lake is frozen over, and the hiking trails are covered with snow.

It's no big deal. Just set the knives aside, find something else to do for a while, and come back to them whenever.

That's it. I call it being 'knifed out' when I get bored with knives. I take a break from them, pick one good folder and carry that until the knife bug bites again. I usually, stop buying, give the forums a rest and put the ones on the desk away. I always come back to them with a renewed interest.

Same with me, I get really into knives for a few months a year, then I get puled into another of my hobbies and usually about the same time next year I get pulled back into knives again. Usually it's when I see something really neat that came out while I wasn't keeping up with the knife world.

I'm currently "knifed out". Most of my interest is in large folders (4" blade) and only every once in a while will a new one pique my interest.

Right on. I see it the same way. Maybe the O.P. would see his cutting tools in a different light if they were dovetailed into other interests. Camping\fishing etc.

I understand what you're feeling. For me, I just change it up a bit, by carrying something off the wall, or foreign to me. Currently I'm burned out by modern folders and fixed blades, and carrying traditional stuff, that I carried when I was a child. Never though I'd get a thrill out of such knives, but I've owned a ton of contemporary knives, that were sorta whiz-bang, or trendy at the time, but I'm finding I keep interest in timeless/venerable cutlery.

You can try:
Making knives
Collecting one specific brand or model
Move onto Firearms
Move onto Watches
Move onto Flashlights
Move onto Custom knives
?

All hobbies require funding to a large extent, you have to pay to play.

I've seen several Cold Steel knives I'd love ta have in pocket or in my knife drawer. But, alas, I have the same problem as you Jamboi. I'm on a fixxed income, ya know SSDI, and after the bills, groceries, vet vivsits, etc, well I don't have anything left. I see products listed here that I'd love ta get, but I'm reminded by my wife what's important comes first. I feel ya, but I too am in the same boat!!

How about some whittlin'? Materials are easy to get a hold of, cost next to nothing. You can make a spoon and give it as a Christmas gift.

Nope. That's why the policy of FEEDBACK is so very important. When I trade or buy from a fellow that has 100% (or close) positive feedback over his last 10-20 transactions, I have no fear. Pictures (closeups) and good descriptions of the product are so necessary also. And if I deal with someone with very limited feedback....less than five or ten, then it is customary that he ships first so that I can inspect the knife before I send out mine. Also, keep it in your written conversation that BOTH parties will be satisfied, OR either party can reverse the transaction.
It has always been "caveat emptor" but we can try to maximize mutual satisfaction with "prior" planning.

Spring and Fall is when I am dominantly out in the woods messing around. The knives follow me. I am pretty much interested year around, but my purchases tend to lump together within a few weeks a couple times a year.

Never sold a knife through BF. Guess in part that's why I am a "registered user" versus a higher membership rating. But I would not send a knife or anything (firearms for example) without cash in hand. If you have a problem, I'll fix it. All you have to do is check my BBB rating.

When I get bored with knives I move back to handguns then to rifles. Its kind of a cycle I guess. I actually got out of knives for a while but the recent craziness in the firearms industry with absurd prices and no availability brought me back to knives in a big way. Kind of glad actually...its a lot easier on the wallet buying knives instead of guns.

I've never really been into buying or trading knives.
I like to learn about them so I read the knifemaker sub-forums often.

Though, once you lose interest in something, well... there is plenty of other hobbies out there.
We won't be offended if you try some other hobbies. :)

Im the same. My interests shift from knives, to long range rifles, to hunting rifles, to handguns, and occasionally pens and watches. But considering I cant really afford to shoot my guns right now, I've been into knives more.

It's funny too, whenever im in a phase, I have the urge to sell off my other hobbies im not currently into!

knives, flashlights, "going to buy a new handgun research phase" (gave up,) back to knives again... new interest for me is aimed towards custom scale making, you could try that.

I've never gotten bored of knives, ever since I got into them. I always have more than one on my person, I always have a knife being shipped to me (I'm so addicted that I actually feel a little depressed if I don't have a new knife being shipped to me), and knives take up a large part or my thought process.

I'm a sick freak, I know. CRKT, Spyderco, Cold Steel, ESEE, I need more of them all!

That said, my hobbies are generally not exclusive to one another. I don't drop a hobby when I get into something else.

Thanks for all the responses. It is good to know I am not alone. It definitely does cycle for me.... and it is true that all new things lose their interest after a while. The last year is a first for me in a couple ways. I have always collected/used folding knives 3 inches or under. I actually bought 3 fixed blade knives around 6 inches. I used them camping and doing yardwork. We currently take care of 3 properties, so there is lots of varying work. That really made knives fun again. Then I decided to go on to larger folders, mainly ZT.

I tell you what was really enjoyable was cleaning up some old knives I have. I inherited several slipjoints from my grandmother and mother. They are well used and in pretty rusty. Then I found a Kissing Crane Large Brown Mule my grandmother gave me as a christmas present years ago. It was nice and rusty, but it cleaned the hell out of it and then played with patinas on it. It feels so good in my hand I think I would like to try my hand at whittling. Usually I only whittle a point on a stick..... Lol
