Getting expensive knives from here to there

I typically ship USPS, and typically add insurance for knives that I couldn't duplicate or replace. Most under $400. This time, I've got a set of 6 knives, worth nearly 2 grand. What's the safest way to ship something in that value range?

I would hand carry them. Seriously, I would feel more comfortable with FedEx than with USPS.

I thought I heard on one thread that there was insurance for knife makers that covered just such risks. For much cheaper?

I'm sure some one smarter than me will come along with more info.

All I know, is every time I ship a single nicer knife, I am stressed out until it arrives!

There is a whole bunch of threads somewhere, maybe in feedback or

You can ship gold and other stuff like that.

Registered mail is the most secure way to ship, but it is slower than Priority Mail. We know a local antique coin dealer who ships everything via Registered Mail.

We throughly researched secure ways to ship after FedEx "misplaced" $75,000 in mammoth ivory. The ivory reappeared after a friend personally inspected the FedEx terminal and found the box.

Holy moly.

Thanks for the registered mail tip, I'll be looking into that.

Yes, Registered mail.
Its slower because every body that touches it has to sign for it and is accountable if it disappears. Theres no real need to insure it because of this accountability. Jewelry shops use registered mail. The packaging needs to be brown wrapped with brown paper tape. No plastic tape visible. The post office will stamp "registered" on all the corners and seams on the box to prove nobody tampered with it. Its worth every penny but like I say its not fast.
