Getting forgetful or just too many knives??

I'm with Ted. I try to limit my knives to one-only of each. I am pretty diverse in my collection, and only rarely purchase a "copy" of another knife. Sitting at about 100 knives, it's not too hard to keep track of what's what. I have a list on my work computer that I keep for insurance purposes, just to remind me.

I do have 2 knives that are currently on walk-about that I know are still around somewhere. I just don't remember where, at the moment. By the time I find them, I'm sure another one or 2 will be missing.

Sometimes I see a rare beauty on 'that place,' and MUST have it. But, before I bid, I check my database of knives owned. Oops... I have one. Oh, well, maybe I will buy this one too!

If you took all your knives and put them in a bag, then while you were blindfolded someone handed you a random knife from the collection do you think you could I dentify all your knives by touch alone?

I've had them try to stupid me in the house and so far I'm battin' a 1000. :)

LOL My grandfather does this to me quite often. Whenever he gets a new knife from someone, he has me close my eyes and see if I can determine what it is!

I don't think I ever bought a duplicate of one that I forgot I owned, but I do have too many knives. I've done things like buy 5 of the same knife, but in different handle materials or steels. That was from my "collecting" phase. I think the most I may own of any single pattern is 7 (Case Copperhead), though no two exactly alike. But those were intentional.

I don’t know about you younger folks but I’m lucky if I still remember what I was posting by the time I hit the send button. I don’t trust myself to remember exactly what I have without a little help and this is as good as it gets.

For those of you who use an iPhone or an android platform Sort-it apps is one of the best out there for anyone collecting anything.

They have a knife/sword specific app that use to be free but I think is like a $5.99 check it out. It allows you to use your phone to catalog take pics of and look up and log current values and descriptions. Definitely worth a look if you have more than a few knives.

The other nice thing is you can export a text version of your catalog and email it to yourself or save it on a flash drive, my point is that it makes it easy to save a copy of your collection somewhere.

I inherited my grandad's collection. Hundreds each of case, hen and rooster, old timer, buck, swiss army, etc you name it. I learned that when he bought a knife, he bought at least 4 of them. Unfortunately every single one had deep pitted rust due to my grandmother storing them for a decade and no one ever thinking about checking on them, or knowing the extent of the collection. I sold off the duplicates that were rusted the worst, and told the buyers i would sand off the rust the best i could without taking off too much, if they wanted, for free. 9 out of 10 didnt want me to clean them up, and i sold them eventually.

I say all that to say, make sure you have a plan for your collection for when you pass on. And if your plan falls through, duplicates may help the successor enjoy some of the former glory.

Well, I now know what link to text my wife when she tells me I have a problem with buying too many knives...this thread!
