about six years ago i got into grinding some blades and heat treating. i bought an anvil and hammered out a crude camp knife. then i got too busy, moved and never made another blade. well the bug hit me again and i set up my forge last night. now i have some questions. my only hammer is a swedish pattern. what other hammers do i need (bear minimum)? what is the best design tong for holding thin metal stock for blade making..V...flat..other?

Your swedish hammer is fine to start. You might want to dress the face and pein. Radius the edges slighty so you don't leave sharp indents in the material you are forging. If you are thinking you are serious about learning to forge find someone to visit. You'll see their selection of tongs, hammers and hardie tools.

If I had only one pair of tongs they'd be a set of Wolf jaw tongs.

Glenn makes awesome tongs when you're ready to buy more.

I forge right off the end of the bar. When it gets too short, I weld on an extension. Makes life so much easier. Then all you need is the tongs that hold your blade while you forge the tang, after you cut the "almost done" blade off.
