getting into heat treating

I've made a few knives but had to send off for heat treat since I don't have an oven. Thinking about taking the plunge and picking one up. My question is - how entailed is it to heat treat? Is it as simple as putting the blade in and setting the apporiate tempurture sequence for the type of steel? Or is there alot more to it. I would be focusing mostly on air-hardned steels like 440-C, ATS-34 and D2. I'd like to be able to do my own heat treat but I also want to know what I'm getting into before I spend $1k on an oven.

Also, as a follow up question - any recommendations on a brand? Evenheat and paragon seem to be the 2 I see the most but I have no idea as to the pros and cons of either of these.

Thanks for your help, Joe

Joey,

I say go for it. I have an Even Heat and like it very much.
It takes a little Experimenting to find what works best in your oven, in your shop. Most HT formulas for common knife steels are pretty straight forward.

I think there are some stickies at the top of this forum that deal with this subject. Should be written by Mr. Cashen. I would highly recomend reading them....

The Paragon knife ovens have narrower insides than
Evenheat's, so heat more rapidly......thus being potentially
less expensive to operate (though a bit more expensive to
buy).
That said...I've had my Evenheat for several years...It works
quite well, and the digital controls were quite easy to get
used to.
