Getting married soon, presenting a knife to our son. Need ideas.

Chiruwa Ang Khola. Babies just love swinging them. No, jk. Case xx Peanut seems appropriate as it is small and cute, definitely heirloom quality depending on which you would buy.

Simple. Buy the Sebenza, use it until he graduates then pass it down to him.

Best of all worlds.

I was in a similar position and gave my son a Victorinox SAK, the limited edition 2012 damast Soldiers knife. I don 't helieve they are still available new but they did a beautiful explorer in 2013 which should still be available if you look around:

It bears the signature of Carl Elsener, who passed away last year. A beautiful piece imo.

If you plan on giving this to him when he gets older you need to think like a boy would at that age. Pre-teen a SAK with a thousand gizmos, Sweet! Teenager, BM grip, awesome. Graduate, ZT 0801, holy shit this is a sweet knife! College, Sebenza, wow Dad this is a beautiful knife, I will keep this forever! That's how it would have gone for me.

Just my opinion of course, but if it's going to be a presentation, heirloom knife, I would get a traditional fixed blade, even if you aren't into them yourself. Something handcrafted from natural materials just has a lot of soul IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I love the other stuff, but I have a hard time seeing them as much more than tools.
Lastly, I would not get something with the thought that this will be the first knife he uses, more like the knife he earns after years of proving his responsibility and capability with using the SAKs, and Moras, etc.

Just have a browse at Jonnas Kallioniemi, or Pasi Hurttila. There's tons of other options, but those are just an example of what have in mind.

Everyone talking about this or that production folder, I would disagree.

If you're seriously trying to give your infant an heirloom quality knife, why not have something made from scratch? Get a completely custom made knife with your son's initials or name somewhere on it. Why bother with a production knife? So he can have the same knife tens of thousands of other people have?

If you want to be unique, then buy him something unique. Plenty of excellent makers here on BF to help you out.

+1 If you want it to be an heirloom and something special, I would go handmade.

I would suggest an engraved sak. A great first knife to learn with, a great too to have through his high school years, and it's always handy to have a bottle opener on you in college.

LOL. The college bottle opener line is great. Love it.

An engraved SAK would be first on my list for him, also, but he really needs two knives. One folder and one fixed blade.

Tha SAK fills the need for a knife to learn with and the fixed blade is something he can look forward to getting later in life. Let him know that it is his, but you can tie it to your first hunting trip together or when he makes it through college or maybe it gets passed to him when he gets married. Something. A handmade knife would be great, but so would a nice K-Bar. A good quailty blade he can use. Even something like an engraved Benchmade 162 Bushcrafter would be nice. That would be my choice.

Are you giving SAKs to the best man and others?

You know it would really suck if you bought something now and it was banned before he could ever use it.

Hey, with the way things are going, you can never tell.

Well, if you live in a woody area then possibly look into a ZT Knife, or a Strider SNG: both of which are tanks of folders. Sebenzas are always great gifts, because there are tons of options considering the handle which makes each one unique.

I would suggest that you buy your son something that may well be unique in the years to come due to the ivory ban; a good slip joint with real ivory handles/scales. The easiest place to buy a good slip joint with ivory scales is probably from KnivesShipFree. They sell quickly when Derrick gets some made. My one and only ivory handled slip joint is the Northwoods Madison. I love this knife.

He doesn't have to use the knife later in life, but he will always know what it stands for and it was from Dad.

My friend...we CAN TELL...if we bother to vote.

Don't have a suggestion but wanted to say congrats.

My daughter was 4 months old at our wedding and I can't wait to get her her first real knife.

Well, no need to buy him something RIGHT NOW! You've got plenty of time to think about it - years and years...

I would go with the savings bonds idea. If you just have to get him a knife, that decision has to be yours.

Congrats by the way. I hope you stay together!

I have to agree with you that we should vote. However, it seems to me that more voters like the idea of the nanny state protecting them than the concept of defending one's rights and freedoms.

Also, look how many times our judges and elected officials ignore the voice of the people.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions and congratulations, I think I am leaning towards a SAK with Alox handles, maybe a Cadet or Pioneer? I think it would be a great knife to start with, teach responsibility, and create some good memories. I plan on getting it engraved and perhaps down the line some custom mods done. I don't currently have any grail knives but later on down the road I will and can pass them down when he is much older. If anyone has input or suggestions about SAK Alox models I'd love to here them.

We are not going to take this thread into a political direction now are we?
