Getting my CCW... What should I carry???

It really comes down to how much experience you have with handguns and shooting them. From what pics the Busse crew has shown of their guns, ask to shoot a wide variety of them (IF they trust you enough with a handgun :p )

I am really thinking a revolver would be a great gun for a newbie... I always get a little freaked out with automatics cause they are... well, they are automatic. ;)

Shoot some semis and revolvers. They way revolvers recoil may not suit your hand very well, then again you might have a natural problem with high gripping semi autos which can be bad.

Personally, you can't go wrong with a 1911 or a .41 magnum :D

Honestly , I've never even thought of of packin anything smaller than a 9mm. HOWEVER!!!! My brother bought this damned Beretta model 21 in .22 cal. , one of the coolest little pistols ever. I cant believe I never noticed them before, you get black or stainless , American made beretta quality,HAMMER AND A FRAME SAFETY! tilt up barrel so you dont have to rack the slide to load or unload(very cool) and its cute as hell! Just check it out ,trust me. Yea yea its not a super commando 45 nightslayer and you might wanna aim for the face if ya ever have to use it , but I know I wouldnt wanna be on the recieving end of it.Good luck.

Try everything you can get your hands on. What feels good to me may be horrible for you. After shooting as many different firearms as you can base you choice off what feels good in your hand and what you feel safe and comfortable with. Choose a caliber that you trust to defend yourself with, but also something that you enjoy shooting. If you choose something that is uncomfortable for you to shoot then you will not want to shoot it often enough to stay proficient.

You have an open invitation to shoot anything I have to see if something feels right to you. The most important thing is that it works for you.

Garth

VERY TRUE !!!
Make sure you practice drawing your weapon from whatever carry method you choose, It should be second nature. Realize the resposibility you have when you carry. Get the right mindset, stay alert, stay Proficient, and stay alive.

Pokey,

Your gonna get a million different guns recommend here. Get what fits you and what you like...if you get a gun you don't like, you wont carry it. Fact. My wife tried several guns when we were looking for her. She said she didn't like glocks( my duty guns) so we searched every decent handgun available, shot several and the last one she looked at was a glock 26......she got that one and loves it. 124g gold dots and it is perfect...for her...good luck on your search and as stated here, train, train, train.

First off, How do you plan to carry? If you are going to use off body carry (purse), I would suggest a revolver for a few reasons. The main reason being the ability to fire all rounds while the firearm is in the purse.

The guys who are telling you to try first and make sure YOU are most comfortable with it, are the ones with the right answer. Don't let some guy tell you what is best for you. The one YOU have confidence with is the one you get.

Secondly, guns are like ladders, when you carry it, you want the smallest lightest thing possible. When you use it, you want the biggest thing available. So everything is a trade off, Small guns are fun to carry, no fun to shoot and hard to shoot well. large guns end up getting left at home.

Lastly, Natural point of aim is something that is easy to check at the gun store. Hold the firearm, look at something on the wall. Close your eyes and point the gun at the thing on the wall. Next open your eyes and look down your sights and see how far off you are. This will help show you how the gun fits you naturally.

Good luck and if your ever in my area look me up.

Go with the S & W model 640 revolver...excellent self defense gun! You can shoot 38, 38+P, or 357 mag. Very versatile!

Thank you for the advice though :D I'll try not to freak out anymore

Your welcome. You could always only load one round for your first shot :)

Good luck and have fun. It can be an enjoyable hobby. My girl and I target shoot regularly.

I am sure we can come up with a few guns you can try. All you have to do is ask and we can have a private gun show for you. Good point on figuring out how you want to carry your gun. That may have some bearing on what would be best.

Unless you have Man Hands I would suggest a classic browning hi-power 9mm. Reliable, adequate power, simple and looks good.

s&w m&p compact in 9mm if your hands are small if they are larger the glock 19. But the m&p is easier to hide for a woman. A revolver takes loads of practice! A m&p is a dummy gun you dont have to worry about anything but getting on target and pulling the trigger. Its great to learn on and cheap, if you dont like it you can sell it for 50 less than what you paid..

Use the KISS method as articulated by Clarence Leonard "Kelly" Johnson, (Lockheed Skunk Works aircraft engineer and aeronautical inovator) as applied to design principal. Keep It Simple, Stupid. I believe that acronym holds true when applied to CCW. Lots to think about concerning CCW, what holster, what gun, what ammo, ect.... My reccomendation is a Smith & Wesson 642 or 442 , .38 special, KEY TO THIS SYSTEM.....CRIMSON TRACE LASER GRIPS(LG-105)!! Simplistic operation when under stress, because if you ever have to use it you will be under a lot of stress. Check it out and I think you will agree. All the best in your search.

Not too heavy, and accidental fires will be easily forgiven:thumbup:

But seriously.. FN FiveSeven with armor piercing rounds. Go big or go home. I'm enjoyng these threads =)

Armor piercing ammo for the 5.7 is restricted to LE/military.

Also, where's the barrel on that nerf gun? Oh wait, I see! Must be a bullpup design!

I seen it for sale in my state, but yeah I think it's illegal to carry in a handgun.

Ruger lcp or lcr, Springfield XD subcompact....... there is so many great options that you need to go to a gun store with alot of guns and get a feel for as many as you can. good luck

The LCP's trigger leaves little to be desired afaic and the recoil is a bit snappy.

Nobody is going to be able to recommend a gun for you. Take Garth up on his offer, go shooting with friends or rent some guns. My girlfriend is looking to get a gun and I am going to steer her towards the FNP-9, PPK and the Ruger P95, but that doesn't mean I expect her to like any of them.
