im getting an XM-18 3.5in in trade tommorow. spanto ground flipper. i was wondering if there was anything i should know about general maintainance or something along those lines. it was suposed to be delivered today, but my mail man has some kind of twisted sence of humor about not allowing people the ability to die happy. so no hinderer until tommorow. (im picking it up at the post office. not taking any chances).

this is a knife ive wanted for a very VERY long time. and one thats not going to sit in the safe. i plan on using it. the only issue with that is that i have no information about what to expect in regards to how to keep it in tip top shape. i read online for the sebenza to use fluo grease, and i also knew it was going to be easy to dissmantle. the only advice i was given about the hinderer was to buy the proper armorers tool to take it apart. but that was it.

so any advice?

where should i buy the armorers tool?

anything will help. i just dont want to not know what to do when it comes time to clean it. (it will see alot of pocket time)

There really isn't anything special about the maintenance really. Just take it down and clean the blade, liners, pivot etc., lube the pivot with some non-petroleum oil or grease just like you would any other folder. Regular touch up on some stones. Edge holding should be great.

You should be alright without the armorer's tool but if you prefer to get it, I believe it's available on the Hinderer website. If not, I've seen it pop up every now and then in the exchange.

For more take down info see this thread: Internal Link (bladeforums.com)

You are going to LOVE the knife! The armorers tool is on the Hinderer site, and does make things a bit easier, since everything you need to disassemble the knife is right at hand. Congrats, and be warned...one is just the beginning!

Every once in a while, when the action starts to feel a little less smooth, I shoot it with WD-40 and work it a bit. After that I blow it out with a can of compresed air and wipe it dry. That's pretty much it. If you need/want to take it apart just follow the advice in the links above.

I would also recommend you get yourself a tube of blue Locktite for the pivot screw and use it sparingly.

As for the armorer's tool. I would like one but don't have one. I filed flat the edge of a penny then filed out a divot and it works just fine.

Also, I have a small Husky torx set along with it's screwdriver counterpart and use them all the time for things around the house. A must have.husky.jpg

Cool, Glad you like it. You already know this I'm sure but you asked for tips. I 'd say just keep that edge in tip top shape.
I wipe mine down with a cloth with some WD-40 on it.
Break it in.
Other than that, enjoy!

That's one fine looking knife, PBS.

I've got the same one in yellow and it's already seen plenty of pocket time.

Is the steel CTS-XHP or Duracoat 20V?

Early Gen 3? And orange to boot. Can't go wrong with orange!

When I eventually get around to showing my face at my current church they always want a handout. Will the new church do that? If not, I'm in. I'll join the ICRH. Na, nevermind, it doesn't have a cool acronym.

Congrats!I have a Gen 3 20CV too!Great knife!Congrats!!!!!:thumbup::thumbup::D

I have had the same knife w/o an orange scale, in my pocket (yup right now in my shorts at home) for almost 3 yrs. I've done nothing to it but about once a year, I'll run some alcohol through the pivot and use a q-tip to clean it up from dust mostly. Afterward I use a drop on each side of the pivot (top & bottom) of a very fine oil (your choice but "fine or thin" only) as Rick's knives don't need to be lubed with teflon washers.

I certainly wouldn't take the knife down for no reason as it would be a waste of time. If it's working great you may want to do what I mentioned or simply put it in your pocket and use it. Good score!

Is is it a liquid? If you applied a few drops then it worked. I've heard it's good stuff. I use Militech-1 or Latama Quik-Release, thin lubricants.

To clean them out just work the action and wipe away exces untill gone. To completely clean is above "run some alcohol through the pivot and use a q-tip to clean it up" move the blade to different positions which exposes different areas of the pivot. After I alcohol cleanse a pivot, and wipe it down pretty good, I use a hair blow dryer on high to dry it up.

This works well if you get the pivot soaked with water (some guys use dish soap & water but I don't) or to dry up additional lubricant since it thins it out and you see it come running out. Don't overthink this, it's probably ready to carry right now from Rick or from the secondary market, it should be all cleaned up for sale if not brand new. ;)

use that thing. its a tool...i love mine

its a tool, its a weapon, its art :D. and its gonna see lots of pocket time.

bllistol is holding up pretty well. its nice and smooth. gotta love that teflon. i dont mind what washers are used because i dont abuse my knives where its going to matter (I.E. i dont consider a knife pry bar). but i hate Hate HATE, nylotron washers. emerson uses them, but thats ok, considering his knives are meant to be beatin half to hell. all i know for sure, is i love this thing. i just gave my benchamde 860 bedlam away as a gift. dont need it. im enjoying this thing too much.

Congrats, a great knife. I have the same except for smooth CF scales. In my pocket all the time and use it everyday. I am sure you will love it more and more everyday.

Left you a message Birdhunter.

I looked over the pictures of the knife which looks ready to be wiped off (if you're germaphobic) and put in your pocket. As I mentioned I see no reason to take it apart. You're reminding me of one of my cousins when we were little. Didn't matter what he got his hands on - he took it apart! :D
