Getting my permit today!

NR, what everyone is telling you is:
DON'T DRIVE LIKE THEY DO IN BOSTON!!!!!!!!!1
congrats- Of course if you ever take the car into Boston proper,
you will only need about the price of a Spyderco Native to paak it.
I'm exaggerating, but not by much.

Man, I've been working a TON of wrecks these past couple months. For the younger drivers, speeding has been a major factor. For the adults, inattentiveness to driving has been the #1 cause. So I guess if you drive a little slower and watch out for the adults, you should be good to go!!

And I tell ya, it may sound a little funny up front, but my parents enrolled me in a certified Driving School when I first got my permit and the lessons I learned have saved a lot of grief over the years. Worth consideration and a step beyond Driver's Ed at school.

In any case, just remember that driving a car is the most dangerous thing most people will ever do in their lifetime. Practice, practice, practice and enjoy (and guard) your new freedom!

Do americans have defensive driver courses there? I did mine at the local race track and it taught me how to control a vehical in a high speed accident (eg. aqua planing then spinning out, how to recover the car if you do lose control and stuff like that).

IMO thats the most valuable thing I've done so far in regards to driving...

Robert, most of the driving schools in the U.S. that I've seen have been informative, but pretty basic--geared more towards a beginner's operation of the car and the rules of the road. Emergency techniques are often explained, but I haven't seen a school where they actually go out and practice these techniques. There may be one out there, but I just personally don't know of one.

And one correction. I think I said earlier "younger drivers" vs. "adults." Sorry, guess that should have been "young adults" at the very least. Anyone who takes on the job may as well wear the title since they certainly are taking on the same risks and responsibilities as anyone else out there on the street. No disrespect intended!

It's true what they say...'If you learn to drive in Massachusetts, you can drive anywhere' :D

There are defensive driving schools up in our area. My dad wanted to enroll me in one when I got my driving permit, but it never happened. I still would like to do it some time.

Driving fast and acting like a jackass results in this..........

Getting your driver's license is a big responsibility. Whatever you do don't end up like this guy. I had to cut him out of his car. In pieces.

Wow. That picture is a pretty convincing argument. Probably started with something like, "Hey Joey, ya chicken - put the hammer down and let's see what she can do!"

Sad. :(

Actually, I did have to use a knife to remove his seatbelt that was cinched around his waist. The impact was so great that I the belt became imbedded into the flesh. I used a Spyderco Remote Release to do the job before we used the Jaws of Life.

How long ago did that happen Ken?
June 16th, 2004. Idiot was doing 100 mph down Lakeview Ave. and hit a pole which sheered off the left side of the car.
